Cass Tech questions and introduction

Hi everyone. This may or may not be TUMS (Team Urban Malt Spelunking) because the team's fate is now questionable since I made my account here. But with or without the team, I will continue to explore. BTW, sorry for the long first post. It's rare for me to make such long posts, but I had a lot to say this time.

I have been to four spots so far, all of which were in Detroit. The first looked like an abandoned cement factory. I went there as failed attempt to get to the "industrial" building. There wasn't that much to see there, but it definitely got me excited and ready for some real exploration. After we left the cement factory, we realized that we could pretty much just drive up and get into the "industrial" building and didn't need to try to walk through the woods (which wouldn't have worked anyway). Doh!

The following weekend we actually made it to the "industrial" building. I have been wanting to go in there since I was 16 (I'm about 20 now) when I used to drive past this beauty every weekend on the freeway. Needless to say, it was like a dream come true. Once I got inside to the main portion of the building I was slightly disappointed in the emptiness of it. There was one floor that actually had stuff on it, but by the time we got up there it was quite dark and our flashlight wasn't the best.

We did some research and set out to explore "an old hotel" the next weekend. I was concerned about getting into the building because it was bricked up rather than boarded up, but I found an entrance easy enough. This place was amazing! There was a strange sense of history that was overwhelming. It made me feel almost bipolar to think of how a place that was once so great and meaningful is now forgotten and left to rot. We explored this place again the next weekend after a failed attempt to get into "a high school". We saw a ton of stuff that we missed the first time.

I was excited to go to "a high school" since I started exploring because it looked like the coolest spot in Detroit from the pictures I saw online. As previously mentioned, the first time we tried to get in was a failed attempt. This place is a freakin fortress. I know a lot of you climbing equipment to get into places, but I don't and this place is in a quite busy area of Detroit. I had to go back the next weekend with some extra careful looking to come up with an entrance, which ended up being a very conspicuous way to get in. I was used to urban spelunking with a group of 4+ people, including 3 guys, but this time it was just me and my sister. We were only inside for about 15 minutes when we heard something that sounded like another person was inside. I didn't think somebody would have entered so soon after us, and had a hard time believing that somebody was already inside since it was so hard to get it. But we walked back to our entrance to make sure it was undisturbed just to be safe. Everything appeared to be as we left it so we continued on exploring. It was only about a 20 minutes later that we heard something again, but this time it was undoubtedly another person inside. The sound of metal rustling around and hitting the ground made me think it was scrappers. I tried to communicate with whoever was inside saying, "Hello. We're just exploring. If you're here scrapping, we don't want your metal....Y'all wanna hit up on this Grey Goose?", but they just got real quiet when they heard us. I wanted to go follow the sounds and meet the people so we didn't have to be afraid of each other, but my sister talked me out of it. We went into the cafeteria where we eventually saw the people walking down the hallway outside of the cafeteria. They shined a blue tinted LED flashlight at us as I shined my 6D maglite back at them. I think we both blinded each other from seeing who the other was, and they just went on their way down the hallway. My sister and I left shortly after. This was just this past Friday.

I decided that I had to go back the next night. I tried to get somebody to go with, but nobody wanted to so I went alone. I was concerned about somebody being there again, but I figured that they probably wouldn't go two nights in a row. I tried to be cautious this time by stopping every few minutes and listening for people. I definitely heard something after being in the building for about a half hour, but I decided that I had to at least make it to the roof this time. I never did hear anything after that one time, but I still thought that somebody may be inside until I left. Now I kinda think it may have been a rodent or something.

Now for the questions...

Was the person that I saw on friday inside this particular high school any of you? I think I was there from like 3:00 AM - 6:30 AM. If it was you, did you use my entrance or do you have your own? I don't need to know where yours is, I'm just wondering if I should be looking for an easier or more discrete one

And just a general question...

What do you guys do when you hear somebody else in an abandonment? Was it wise for me to try to communicate?

Edit:
I'll post up some pics of the hotel and high school when I get a chance.

Edit2: Edited to remove names.

Try not to post places by name. They get burned down. The Rookie Forum goes to Google.

But these are already pretty well known spots. I found them with google. I understand what you mean, but I don't think it would make a difference in this case.

Yeah... I mean, it's Detroit. Shit's gonna get fucked up, Google or no Google.

But anywhere else or anywhere that seems relatively untouched, Apple's right. Not only will you be sad that your location is now trashed, you will have also pissed off a bunch of people who felt like they had ownership over said location. Ain't the internet fun?

Yeah I figured that. I'm not trying to break any rules, so I'll remove the names if needed. I just thought the no name thing was more of a guideline that I didn't feel was necessary to follow in this instance. Information on all of these places (except the cement factory) is all over the internet, with addresses. I will take care not to mention names of places that aren't already well known though.

I try to keep the real morons out. That is, people who google "Detroit abandoned" and that's the furthest extent of their searching. Clearly anyone willing to put in a bit of time will find these sort of places, but also those people break shit less often.

There's definitely no rules about posting the name of a place, but like Bounce said, lots of people like to claim 'ownership' of a place. It's easy to blame the inevitable decay of any place on "people talking about it on the internet." While that's an unlikely connection (unless you go "This place at this address had xxx cool expensive loot, and you get in this way"), people have trouble not hating someone they blame for things. In other words, naming places may or may not cause harm to the place, but it'll make you unpopular with the people who could show you cool stuff.

I edited the original post to avoid conflict. I'm not trying to start off here by giving a bad impression. I hope people won't view me as a moron for using google to find my locations for awhile. It's a great way to find cool spots before they get demolished. If my goal was to explore any abandonment, it would actually be easier to drive around than to look online. I will eventually start finding my own locations, but not until I feel I have enough well known locations under my belt.

Edited for pictures
Pics aren't great. I am by no means a photographer.

If i see people in an abandoned building, sometimes i will try and communicate. Depending who they are or what they look like. If its a crackhead/bum/scrapper in there ill usually just ignore them. Say hi and keep on moving. If its other explorers ill sometimes talk to them and then go on my way. All depends who it is.

I wouldn't acknowledge if someone was doing something illegal - like when you yelled "hey if you guys are scrapping we don't want your metal" - that would put the crooks on edge. Just ignore them and if you meet face to face just say "we're cool, just passing through."

Better to go where they are working, plant your foot on top of their pile of copper and say "Thanks for doing all the work for us assholes, now gtfo!" Then start flipping around the nunchucks.

Thanks for the replies. My interwebz sarcasm detector sucks, but anybody who wanted to come along was allowed to be part of TUMS. The problem is getting enough people. Most people that I know are either too afraid or they just think it's stupid.

You've come to the right place. We all know it's stupid, but we go anyway.

We do indeed know it's stupid. The Wife Unit loves going to spots with me but she won't take the same idiotic risks I do. She tells me that normal people identify certain situations as hazardous and avoid them but I see them as hazardous and therefore fun. She is awesome though.

Also I don't know about your getting enough people issue. I like to cap at 4 an I prefer 2. More people more problems.
