This is pretty risky...You want to talk about this?

There's tons of water towers everywhere its not a "secret tower" or anything..

Its the large satalite dishes that i believe are quite dangerous. I watched this documentary that talked about the microwave radiation in the front of the dish, so if you fall into the path you will literally burn up.

we are beign whacked by all types of light every second of the day, so remember just because you can't see it doesn't mean its not there.

Radio waves (even microwaves) aren't quite that bad, if you fell through the focal point of the dish you'd get a lot more radiation than just passing through the beam of a microwave repeater, but it would only be for a fraction of a second. Microwaves tend to excite the water molecules in your body, causing heating (also how microwave ovens work). If you sit in front of a microwave dish long enough you could damage your eyes or other soft tissues, or give yourself cancer. Regular radio antennas can also do this to some extent, depending on the power output and frequency, and climbing a metal tower with current passing through it could burn your skin or electrocute you. If you plan to climb one and want to know more, look up some HAM (amatuer radio) websites that talk about radiation safety. The general rule is that brief exposure is not dangerous, but prolonged exposure or multiple brief exposures within a short time can cause damage. People who live under large power lines or near antenna farms supposedly have higher cancer rates (according to the media), since the power density of the area near the radiation source increases exponentially as you get closer.

It's always better to be safe, make sure you know what you're doing and what the specific dangers are before climbing on or around active radio towers.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

I've climbed 4 different water towers. All of them I was inside the tower while I climbed. Two were under construction at the time, two were already in use at the time. All but one of them are full of cellular relay equipment. I've rappeled down the inside stem of two towers, it made me very dizzy. Security on the construction sites was low, security on the used towers was even lower. We used swiss army knives to open the doors, but a credit card or coat hanger would also have done the trick.

Wow, I really don't like how this thread is going. Im seriously starting to worry I have some weird type of cancer now - and I'll never be able to have kids.

Receiving dishes aren't very dangerous because they can only pick up a fraction of what was sent. Transmitters on the other hand can cook you.
These have enough security to keep you away though, as it would be disasterous for a company to have a transmitter shut down when they haven't planned for it.

yes transmitters are very very dangerous, Its not too uncommon for arcs coming from the top of the tower to reach something on the ground. never go near these when they are operating. RF burns are much worse then other electrical shocks as they burn you from the inside. would certainly suck to die that way.

what all can RF signals do?, I'm not too sure about what can happen, thats why im asking. at my work on the Roof, the access door says "Beyond this door RF signals may be present" so I was wondering, cause sometimes i take smokebreaks up there when its cold out...

Well If its a high power antenna (not usually on buildings except for the CN tower), then you have very little to worry about. although I highly suggst you avoid touching the antenna. Its on the high power transmitter towers that yuo can be zapped by an electric arc (like a tesla coil), it takes a high voltage to force an RF singal through air. Its the radio transmitter fields that have the deadly towers. Breaking into those fields would give yuo a high chance of being zapped, its a huge fear among antenna workers of arcs hitting the ground. ITs scary as hell to have 8 million watts of electricity hitting the ground beside you and it does happen, a lot more often then you would think. Of course theres always teh issue of RF radiation and its supposed cancerous effects, mind you its more the media speaking this then actual scientists

I've been thinking about getting on our hometown water tower, and I even suggested it a couple times to CMH, but we haven't got around to it yet since our plate is pretty full UE-wise. Is it really that interesting? The best thing I can think of would being able to get on the inside of an unused one.

It is interesting to get into an empty water tower, you can walk around inside the tank, along the catwalks, and into every little nook and cranny. Also there is less security when there is no water to protect. We usually try to explore any tower under construction.

My dad worked by a giant microwave (antenna?) in HI. They called it the dinosaur cage and after he told me how powerful and dangerous it was, I asked him why they didn't put a fence up around it. He replied "By the time you would get within 100yds, you would be burnt to a crisp." Ha-ha. Just what I needed to hear at that age. Anyway, there is something really creepy about some water towers that I can't seem to get over. One near my old place in Cambridge, WI, was lighted a little. When you stood at the base of it and looked straight up, it was sooooo immense that it made you feel kinda insignificant. I get the same creepy vibe from those REALLY huge power line towers that are, like, giant steel tubes some 5 feet around and God knows how high.

Have any of you guys read 'It', by Stephen King? There's a rather eerie water tower in it, that would help account for the feelings of unease.

Then again, a lot of water towers look like an alien spaceship or a Q-Tip of mammoth proportions, which is also a bit unnerving.
