Was watching the Discovery channel show The colony, and was Just curious, does anyone (any of you "Louisianians") know where they filmed this? Supposedly it is in an abandoned 10 acre complex in Louisiana that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina... Curious if anyone knew where this was... I would like to go there to see if any of the shit they used was still there, like tools and such...

i'm on my way to vandalize the eff out of it. haha, kidding.

that's pretty cool though, i google-mapped it and it's crazy that it's just a whole area lacking life, and around it, inhabited buildings and homes and such.
i've never seen the show personally. do you know why the area is abandoned? was it solely for the purpose of the show?

It was abandoned because of Katrina but a group of people stepped in to keep it abandoned for the show so they could perform an experiment to see how well these people could rebuild a society/colony or survive in an post-apocalyptic world during/after a disease epidemic (but without the real disease in the show) and so they built shelters in the abandoned buildings there and set up a semi-Fallout like community...so yeah it was kept abandoned for the show but caused by Katrina...great show too I love it.

Well damn! BelleZ and I were right near there a few weeks ago. If I was paying closer attention, I'd have checked this out, after dodging workers inside and cops outside of Six Flags

cops and workers inside six flags? Were the cops out there doing training again? Or are they actually starting to work on demoliton or something?

Both were wrong-place-wrong-time. The workers pulled up at the base of the big rollercoaster while I was on the track. I thought at first they'd spotted me, but they were just doing stuff down at the base of the entry and exit ramps. So, we jumped off the tracks, sloshed through to the ghost train, ran through that, fell off walls into the swamp, and eventually made it out to where we'd hidden the car. We drove off filthy, bloody, and sodden, but giggling with close-call glee.

Unfortunately, an idling cop saw us suspicious sorts, and pulled us over a few blocks away, and proceeded to grill us as to where we'd been. We claimed to be lost tourists, but he knew exactly where we'd been. "We're looking for the 510 downtown?" "You folks been to Six Flags?" "five-ten?" "six flags?".

He took our licenses and registration, and went off to run them, but got an urgent call, threw or stuff back at us, and said "you're lucky"

So far everything is still a go for this weekend. I am not familiar with Louisiana territory, might be staying with a friend's family, or at a hotel for the night. I will try and get on somewhere in that time and see what everyone is doing here, and maybe schedule a meet-up. Probably Sat around 3 or 4 pm... or maybe sunday a.m. ... Just depending on what time i get there. I get off of work at 730 am and will pick my girl up and drive strait out there (5.5-6 hrs)

I loved looking this location up in Google maps. While the "colonists" were scrounging and cooking roaches for dinner, barely surviving on rice with water... There was a Subway Sandwich shop not half a mile away... The irony!

For those who havent seen the landscape...

Here is some Google Earthery showing the location before and after Katrina...
