Not trying to hurt anyone's feelings but what is it about this sport that attracts so many people without "a ride" ? Lets find out> poll forthcoming!

For a long time I lived in the city without a car because I had no need for one. Why would I need a car to drive to school? The walk is short and Metro Transit goes just about everywhere.

Since I've a been a car owner, I've had a suspended license or two...

Two good reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with my income.

Pitch in for gas and carpool. Is a convoy necessary to UE?

My car was totaled recently so that slows me down. This all happened in one weekend, moved to a new apartment, best friend died, totaled car, had a bank issue that I am just now recovering from 3 months later. I'm nearly caught up so I should be buying a car soon.

Well, you know, you sometimes come across valuable things while exploring. I fund my studies by selling the old stuff in the black antiques market, salvaged copper wires back to the company that maintains the electrical grid and railway tracks to the State Railways if and when some of it... err... goes missing.

Also, one should not forget rats and pigeons, both important sources of protein for the poor financially challenged.

Honestly, Urban Exploration should be limited to people who can afford it.

UE transcends everything.

I know folks that park 40-60 thousand dollar cars/trucks offsite then throw 10 thousand dollars worth of camera equipment on their backs before the walk in and I know folks that need to be picked up, are happy as hell to have a hundred dollar camera and 2 fifty dollar lenses and have their film processed as negs only for like 5 bucks cause its all their means allow.

but as a whole, as inexpensive a hobby this is to get involved in, its inevitably going to attract the less funded.

I think we've all had some great times exploring that have cost little more than the gas or pedal power it took to get there.

come to the northeast, I think we're definitely in the top 3 geographical locations for rideless explorers.

I own my own vehicle and it has been all over the province. I've gone through two prior vehicles though, due to extensive travel. I actually prefer to do the driving but will gladly pitch in and would expect the same from anyone else.

On the matter of income and the type of people UE attracts... when I first joined UER I was completely shocked within the first 72 hours. There was one specific thread where people were talking about eating food found in dumpsters. One person specifically talking about finding a cake in a dumpster and consuming it.

To me, this was considered disgusting but since then I've come to see that there are members of many different incomes and living styles.

UER attracts a different crowd than UE in general. I think it's more normal for people on this site to not have a car or job.

I might be speaking out of school here (having both a good job and a vehicle) but my guess is that not having a car/job slows you down a bit. It's the realization of the cliche "stop and smell the roses". I know if I am walking somewhere, or without a vehicle for some reason, I notice a helluva lot more than I do when I speed by in the ol' motor coach. Keeping busy due to of not having a job would be some pretty good motivation to get out and walk some old neighborhoods for someone with an already inquisitive mind.

Cars are evil.

I’m quite positive that you’ve slept with someone uglier than me, and I’m sure I’ve slept with someone hotter than you. So let’s just call it a draw.

I think theres truth to this also...
UER is an accurate snapshot of UER but hardly so of the UE community as a whole.
there is a metric shit ton of well accomplished explorers that have never logged on to a UE website.

I find there's a huge gap between the "online" UE community and the "IRL" UE community.
remove the anonymity of the computer and people often change considerably.

I have a job and a nice truck that guzzles gas and I love UE. So none of the above.

There's also the idea that no one wants 8 vehicles parked in front of an abandonment. Tends to tip people off (po-lice) that there are some trespassers inside up to no good.
So sharing a ride can be a good idea.

great replies all!

humor aside I was actually curious about the demography of this and some other recurring traits on UER

personally I have 3 cars and 3 motorcycles and at least for the time being, a job

since I dont do crack I may have to trade mine for something like food if the economy gets much worse

Ah gotcha, I was a bit confused as it seems the title "Does UE = low income / no income?" and the options didn't quite really leave any wiggle room for employment, living status, etc.

I'm gainfully employed and have been for the last three years at the same company, and I own a company that's been in the green for the past two years that pays the bills.

Living with some roommates; I can afford to live alone comfortably but I much prefer the company as I work from home so it gets quiet and lonely.

Own one car, completely paid off. No debt to speak of. But I have been unemployed, in debt, and for a few short stretches homeless.

Can relate, just got sideswiped by an 18 wheeler hauling a cat excavator and totaled my truck in the disastrous freeway mess in Grapevine. I have but one comment "INSURANCE COMPANIES SUCK!"

Barely offered me trade in value, oh well, that's why the devil created lawyers!

As for work, I Have a great job except for the fact that I have to work so much, especially in the last year, I get hardly no time to explore anymore, the upside is my job gets me access to some really cool places.

Example, recent visit to the general in Waco ........

I have a job, do not have a car or license (and probably shouldn't since I would drive like I'm in Detroit), I use my ttc metropass and sometimes go transit. For longer trips we normally carpool and I pitch in for gas.

Chris-Kicker and I once discussed this. My take on it is this.

If your really poor, then UEing is just living life in your neighbor. You will never hear a homeless guy say he's urban exploring, hes just living. I think there is a certain economic threshold, that it goes from, hey this is cool abandoned stuff. to, hey this is somewhere like home.

I've got a car and a job but just about all my money goes to rent/utilities, school and groceries. luckily I make enough to drive to austin for gigs or into dfw every once in a while for a little UEin'. my frequent lack of gas money definitely puts a damper on my UE plans though, which is why I usually try to get someone to join me so they can help out with the gas.
