I think you might be right. It was pretty cool, something I hadn't seen before.
As for the history, there is one major tidbit that's neat: The town/area was discovered by Davy Crockett.
From Wiki:
David Crockett discovered the area of Honey Grove when he camped there on his way to join the Texas Army at San Antonio in 1836. Crockett sent many letters back to Tennessee, telling of an area with an abundance of honey-filled trees, thus the town's name. In 1842, Samuel Erwin became the first settler of the place. B. S. Walcott contributed much to the town's development, by planning the city's landscape and later on selling building lots. In 1873 Honey Grove was officially established.
Also very cool (and quite helpful actually), there is a high quality litho of the city as it stood in 1886:

That sucks man, we have driven through there like 6 times and never noticed all that stuff. That's ok I will be making several trips up there for hunting season, so I'll check it out.

There is a school system, various stores, and a police department still in operation. Just like all of the little towns in Northeast Texas, these towns depended on cotton farming and ranching to get by. Farming and ranching aren't what they used to be, so neither are the towns.

| | | | Yeah, the census shows under 2k people there. However, downtown is dead. There are no businesses operating. Even the bank, which by all appearances looks to be functional, except that it still has a decorated Christmas tree in the lobby.
There's no one around at all. I was there on a Saturday afternoon and I heard nothing but my own footsteps for several hours.

Wolfe City is freakin' awesome. There is an old mill there that is out of this world. I drove by it on three sides and saw no immediate holes in the fence, but it is DEFINITELY on my list of places to do a real expedition in. It is so killer looking from the outside. It's very large too. This is the place I'm talking about:

Yeah, that's my hometown. That mill IS pretty badass, but it's still partially active as a feed store.
