| | | Hai. I'm writing an article (for an academic journal) about the various 'Doors Open' programming. And I'm just wondering if anyone has had any success submitting locations they've been interested in or have seen exploring to be included on the program for whatever city you live in? Since I'm writing about the events from a North American standpoint, I'm having a hard time narrowing down interesting places to mention or cover. So, any favorite Doors Open locations? Anywhere in North America? Or, has anyone worked as a guide at a location or submitted locations for nominations? Or, better yet, has anyone found any toilets/porn/parties/abandonments/homeless people in a Doors Open location? Please tell me!

| | | Probably some of the best Doors Open locations I've visited are the ones that allow the person to move around the building on their own (when possible), but still have people there to answer your questions. I've always found that Hamilton, ON puts on a good Doors Open Event, there's always more than enough locations that many aren't crowded, and not many have long line ups (Dundern Castle was the only place I had to wait in line for). Hamilton is also very open to photographers, sometimes certain rules like "no flash" is put in place for safe guarding the location of course. I have never been disappointed with a DO: Hamilton event.

| | | In 2004 a group at www.hiddenglasgow.com (myself included) petitioned the organisers to include Glasgow City Mortuary. A year later it was included and it was the ONLY year it was included! 38 chiller cabinets and 8 autopsy suites; best mortuary I've ever been in. I know that's not very helpful to a North American article though, sorry! Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

No! That's awesome! For selfish reasons, I'm trying to make the case that Scotland is the home of my discipline and it's been neat to read about the origins of Doors Open. I have a bit about the Glasgow pre-quel, so that is actually very helpful believe it or not. I'm in public history, and a lot of initiatives that get extracted to North America that make people go like whoa I'm finding actually began in Scotland. The People's Story in Edinburgh comes to mind. Not trying to kiss yer ass, just an aside! And thanks, Axle. I will check out the old Hamilton programs. The only location I have a lot of material on right now is the Don Jail so ZzzzZ but better than nothing.

Well, the first UK DOD was in Glasgow, in 1990! http://www.doorsop...boutdoorsopen.html The original idea germinated in France in 1984 with the first Journée Portes ouvertes des Monuments historiques. This established the basic principle of opening up to visitors, free of charge, buildings and heritage sites normally closed or difficult to access. It also gave us the name Doors Open Day. DOD Canada was started in Toronto, with DOD 2000, which was a direct clone of the Scottish event of 1990. It made me smile to speak to some Torontonian's who asked me if we had anything like DOD in Scotland. Just another thing I could use the standard answer of 'yeah, we had that 20 years ago' with!
