Finding Places to Explore In Central Iowa
< on 8/23/2010 6:26 AM >

I am new to Urban Exploration I live in a small town in Central Iowa. I am having trouble finding places to go. I have made it to a few places but the graffiti was terrible in most of the houses even the copper wires had been ripped out of the walls. So I decided to see if anyone could give me a lead on a good place to go that has pretty easy access, thats worth seeing in Central Iowa.

Thanks for the help,

Yennik10

There's nothing to explore in central Iowa!

I went to college there...I'm an avid mine explorer and have explored mines all over North America and Europe, and the most dangerous mine I've ever set foot in is in Fort Dodge, Iowa. We still need to go back there with some snowshoes/some way to cross the quickmud without sinking in. The Fort Dodge region also features two large abandonments (easy to find if you do your research) and there are/were some smaller stuff along the Des Moines river valley from Fort Dodge down to Woodward-ish.

Other than that, there's nothing to explore in central Iowa! Except for countless active grain elevators that you can (or at least could) walk right into and take the elevator up to the top for a great view of...cornfields.

Something new may have popped up since I left tho, I don't visit very often.

I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird.

Iowa is Minnesota's bitch. There's an art to pooping.

There are a few largish buildings in Des Moines which are clearly visible as abandoned from say, a four-lane road. One is a somewhat toxic place with a 24 hour guard, but the guard never leaves his climate controlled shack.

There are 2 largish and totally empty warehouses on the North side of Des Moines.

There is a disused portion of the USDA lab away from the main campus.

There were 6 (Hirsch, Stetson, Bob Allen, CBC, Reppert and Keck Oil) near downtown Des Moines that were bulldozed in the last year or so. Kingsway Cathedral has been re-occupied after a church group with some more money than the previous church group took it over and started major rehab after years of it sitting abandoned.

Once open, but now locked up tight and alarmed are the electronics factory of 63rd Street, the cookie factory in Boone, the insurance company on University and meat packing plant in Urbandale.

I haven't checked on the vacuum cleaner factories since the company packed up moved to Mexico.

There's stuff in Central Iowa, but you have to look.

Wow, I'm impressed! This guy's first post is the obligatory "anyone know of any places to explore in (insert vicinity here)" and for some odd reason, no flaming, just constructive ideas on places to go. Yennik10, you should go buy a lottery ticket!

I think part of it is that us Iowans are respectful and polite and would rather be constructive than put people down. We were raised in happy small towns with friendly people and little crime.

Another part of it is that the guy sounds like he has half a brain and we intentionally did not give any handouts (specific locations/directions). We only gave general info that will eventually lead to the finds but only if he does the research. Handouts bad, hints good.

I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird.

There's much more to explore in Central Iowa than you might initially expect. I've added 6 new locations to Iowa in the last 2 months and have several more on a personal list to check out before adding them.
I'll give you that some are really hard to find. I've had a lot of success asking people in the area about it and, being as this is Iowa, people are really helpful and friendly about it. All you have to say is that you're doing research/photography for school/a book/a newspaper.

Just not what I expected to see for replies to that sorta question. I'm all for being helpful and/or respectful, (I hope that I am) it just seems like it's not the norm on these boards.

glad you were able to find some places. for some reason, iowa is plentiful in high schools, mostly in tiny towns, and you just have to find them by driving around or passing through. there is one in dinsdale that you absolutely could not miss if you tried, however it's a bit off the beaten path. good luck!

Welcome to the Midwest.

I know it's a hike for you, but we're having a meet-up tomorrow in Omaha. High noon at the Amtrak station.

You guys should come out to Eastern Iowa. I'm talking Dubuque's tri-state region. Clocktoberfest is coming soon!

Sorry to keep whoring this thing out, but you guys should come out for it. I've already got some Des Moines explorers coming out for it, like Ascender and Juggslayer McVomit. Clocktoberfest 2010 is going to be epic:

There is also a thread about it on this forum. Lots of pictures from a previous year when the event was held too.

That's exactly how I started UEing when I was 16 and first got my drivers license! Tons of fun, for a start.
