In the approximate order they were done:

I agree that the rest are fairly meh. If you want to know what you're doing wrong, here's my humble opinion:
1: I love gears but this shot is unfocused. Pick the part of the cog that's the most interesting (I vote for goop) and isolate it with sharp focus, contrast, color, etc.
2: Railroad tracks create a vanishing point. I know, I want to shoot it too, but it also makes me mildly suicidal when I see it for the gazillionth time. Just say no unless you have the most badass vanishing tracks shot ever.
3/4. Nothin wrong, all right.
5. You either need to fill the frame with your sparks or give it some negative space around the edges to let it breathe.
6. You got some good light here, drop to floor level and give it a little perspective and you're cooking with gas.
7. I agree with the comment above, go vertical. Also, this shot doesn't need to be centered. often if you use a hallway to fill the left or right third of an image it works out well.

1) Find big drayyyyynes
2) GO. IN. BIG. DRAAYYYNNNEESSS!
3) Using a remote set your DSLR to BULB mode
4) Get your buddy to stand down range and focus on him
5) Buddy spins burning steel wool on the end of a rope
6) As buddy is spinning the steel wool expose your shot, after he is done stop exposing
7) Allow camera to process
8) Continue allowing camera to process
9) Give up all hope that the camera even took the photo as you wait for it to process
10) Be overjoyed once the camera is finished processing
11) Realize photo is out of focus/blurry/not exposed well
12) Repeat steps 4-11 until satisfied
13) ?????
14) PROFIT!!

Steel wool will burn when lit on fire. Try it out, but buy in bulk because once you start it's hard to think of reasons to stop. (you usually need to swing it around to give it enough oxygen for the filaments to keep burning though)

Well it dosent *burn* so much as *melt* and if you spin it and give it O2 it melts faster and little beads of melty delicious metal fly off and leave those lines. Any old lighter will do, or a 9v battery. Works best with #00 #000 or #0000 grade steel wool, not the coarse stuff you scrub dishes with.
