The Hive House

I went to check out this place with Rickyfitts the other day before we met up with Superlocrian and went to the dealership...I'm dubbing it the hive house because the whole thing was practically a bee hive or wasps nest. I got stung 2 or 3 times by some wasps before I realized this of course but luckily I'm not allergic lol. But they were living in so many of the walls and cracks, inside and outside the house and luckily they didn't completely block the way in. They did keep us out of a couple rooms however. Not 100% sure as to why the place is on stilts though...it's far from anywhere that looks like it might flood. There was a very small creek nearby so maybe that's why idk...also not sure how old the place is either. But for now heres some photos I took of the place:

Looks like a "recent" abandonment, like within the last five years or so. Cool pics, thanks for sharing!

Right! lol I was very tempted but we decided it was best to leave it for multiple reasons...this place was on someones property right across from their house so I don't know if all that stuff belongs to them or has any sentimental value for one, that and deciding which one of us would get it...didn't look like too many people frequent the place to me though since it's in the middle of nowhere and if it's been sitting there that long I figure it'll last a bit longer at least. Just glad I got a picture of it just in case it is gone in the future...maybe I can pull a print of it from the photo or paint a reproduction since I also do oil paintings although it wouldn't be the same but still

nice find. maybe there are animals that are bothersome? i worked with a guy who lives out by lake tawakoni (-2 for spelling), he has had problems with coyotes and a small bear at one time.

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

Nice find. It always intrigues me with houses like this. With residential, I tend to think "What happened to the original occupants?" - "Why would they leave their home" etc..

Usually more than a business or other commercial type building, for some reason.

Anyways, I can totally relate with the wasps. I got stung coming out of an abandoned warehouse in North Richland Hills last weekend. For some reason I didn't see them coming in, but I found out about them as I was leaving. Ha.

I'll bet that house was THE BOMB back in the late 70's-80's!!

(In my old lady voice):I tell ya, these kid explorers now a days don't have the same morals we had back when I started... What ever happened to 'take only pictures, leave only footprints'? I'm ashamed of those of you encouraging this fine young explorer to disturb the abandonment, and take from it some of the awesome treasures to be seen and photographed by future explorers.... *HUMPH!* Uhh.. that being said, ....

There was a girl I went to school with a long time ago (Well, not THAT long ago...) and she lived in a house that looked almost exactly like this one. (It was in the Houston area, so this isn't it...) and I asked her why her house was on stilts, it was the only one like it in that part of town. She said her parents just liked the way it looked, and it was less likely to be vandalized. So maybe that has something to do with it... consider it a clue.

And my exploring hats off to you for exploring with so many stingie things! I once got stung about 7 or 8 times at The Baker by yellow jackets. I will never forget it... ask anyone that knows me, I bring it up a lot. It was quite traumatizing. My face swelled up until I looked like Sloth from The Goonies! I can't say .. well, I can say that if I saw a house like that, even as cool as it looks... I'd have to wait outside for you guys. So awesome job... and thanks for taking the chance so you could share the pictures with us.

Thanks! And no problem, happy to share.

that just gave me the image in my head of when the guy on Man Vs Wild got stung by bees and his faced swelled up...that really sucks, I can imagine that was not pleasant for you. Luckily for me it was only wasps that stung me and only a few, they didn't really swell too much, they went away after a few hours. And yeah after I got stung I was a little afraid of them just swarming me or stinging me again but I was just extra careful then on out, still determined to get in. And thanks for the clue

Also I don't believe in removing things from sites either...the only time I can ever fully agree with that is if the place is knowingly going to be torn down with everything in it very soon, then I consider it further preservation of the building and it's memory by taking it to keep it safe in the right hands or if theres a ton of a little insignificant somethings like a railroad nail or pencils or something as long as a significant amount are still left behind and it doesn't totally ruin or change the site...although I am usually happy with having just pictures of things if I can't get to a site before it's destroyed. I do have a few small things from buildings that I knew would no longer exists and I was glad I got them before they were destroyed that way a small part of the building still lives on...they're kinda like pieces of art themselves in my opinion, urban artifacts that should be in a museum, not that any museum would value them or anything. But that painting at that house looks like it's survived that long on it's own and I don't think that place is in danger of being torn down or destroyed any time soon so it should definitely stay in my opinion for other explorers to see...granted those explorers don't see and take it lol

# 17 was a great shot of a warped fan. You noted something about a burnt floor, so I take it the abandonment was due to a fire.

Cheap MDF (Medium-density fiberboard) blades and extremely high humidity as you'd find here in Texas. Medium-density fiberboard is basically just real hard cardboard.

That warped ceiling fan is crazy! And I agree about the humidity. It's been really bad down here in Houston. Anyway, great photos. They remind me of a house we went into in Refugio. Beautiful house. I'll have to post pics soon.
