Somewhere in the desert

These images are not terribly new, but considering I just recently started posting around here I figured I'd throw them up and put them on trial. All images are from Death Valley/Rhyolite Ghost Town. Shot with a Nikon D90 with a fair bit of post processing.

Ah, nice. I love the ghosts. Number one is a bit out of focus, and they're all a little noisy, but the desaturation works. The compositions are quite good as well. I prefer my photos with a bit more contrast, though.

yeah, i would have denoised a bit, but kept the saturation the same. but really cool regardless.

Horizon lines are crooked, compositions could be better.

Might I suggest a bubble level?

Some Belgian artist went out to that ghost town a while ago and just started making stuff: http://www.goldwellmuseum.org/

The one with multiple ghosts is supposed to represent The Last Supper; pretty unique. And then 100ft away are the remnants of a big mining era town.

They are a bit noisy, I shot like an idiot without checking the iso that day and came to realize after reviewing the pics indoors that it was set to 1600 (why I would have set it that high at any point is beyond me). I normally would have just scrapped the pics and went back out to shoot more, but the clouds on that day were simply amazing. The next day was pure sunshine and that's just not as appealing...

Thanks for the input. I agree, a bubble level would come in handy, though I'd probably never end up using it. If I spent a little extra time setting up my shots it would show, but I just sort of run and gun.

This happens...occasionally. What I try to do now though is stick to a routine. I go through a strict process setting up prior to shooting. Now you might say, "But consecrated, I gots no time for that nonsense! I am a busy explorer!" and I understand, but commit it to routine/habit...then it becomes muscle memory, and next thing you know you'll be checking ISO, focus, metering, level, white balance and everything else pertinent in seconds.

As for the photos, the noise kind of kills them for me (sorry!). I like the saturation though.

Noise aside,
1. Like the subject and saturation but prefer longer exposure on the building.
2. Sun too high? Car a bit underexposed
3. Horizon bugs me (I do that all the time) but then you'd have the boardwalk/pallet thingy out of level...not sure what to do there.
4. Like, but focus...

# 1 is an awesome building, and the angle on the shot is great.

Yeah, I got into the habit of checking ISO before I even leave the house now because of that trip. I still like the shots even with the noise, but I can definitely see how it bugs some people. Live and learn right...

Checking all that should take you less than 5 seconds anyway, considering most of that information is available at the same time on the display of any DSLR.

Now changing those settings might add on a couple seconds, but this shouldnt be a time-consuming task
