| | Missile base near Denton < on 7/9/2010 5:49 PM >
| | | has anybody been to the NIKE missile base near Denton? I was planning on checking it out yesterday but It was too rainy. If the weather cooperates I'll pay it a visit later today. I know the control area is now privately owned so I may be able to talk the owner into letting me look around. the launch area doesn't appear to have many above ground structures left and I believe it is now owned by UNT (they built a small observatory on the site and it was used by the astronomy dept. for several years).

| | | You pretty much hit the nail on the head. It's owned by UNT, and is an observatory. Not much else to it. LINK> http://www.civilde...om/nike/index.html

| | | yeah, cant see much from the road, I walked back a ways along the fence and there's still a small guard tower standing past the big mounds of dirt, but I didn't see much else. I heard that UNT tore down most of the above ground structures but I'm hoping some of the underground portion may still be mildly intact.

Ugh, Doesnt sound like you'll be getting in anytime soon unless they missed a spot or You don't mind a breaking and entering charge for being caught with a angle grinder trying to get in...

I had no idea. Good to know, though. EDIT: Would the SALT treaty still stay in effect if someone bought the place, and was going to restore it to live in? [last edit 7/19/2010 7:21 PM by Armed Geoduck - edited 1 times]

| | | good question but I doubt it 1 theyre all obsolete, decommissioned and the USSR no longer exists so Id feel comfortable in saying no 2 the guy in Terrell (private owner) had one of his opened for a while (only the magazine (launcher) doors had to be welded the stairways and man hatches did not) but he apparently cut his open magazine doors 3 the one in Denton couldve been treated differently as I dont believe it ever upgraded to Hercules (nukeleelur warhead) the didnt have secured storage for the fuzes and whatnot

| | | Be careful driving on the back north side of the fence behind the tower. It gets really muddy. Got my truck stuck out there last year.

| | | Dishoul and I finally made it out to this place and it was a huge success! the hatches that lead down to the magazine chambers are in fact open though most of them are flooded with what looks like about ankle deep water. I will definitely be coming back with waterproof footwear. there is one building still standing and it is filled with what looks to be things own by the UNT archeology dept. catalogued bones, pottery shards, etc. we where able to get down into one of the magazine chambers that was mostly dry and it was really cool, tons of junk from the missile base era just laying in there decaying. and some kind of small creatures, probably frogs. Dishoul will post the pictures soon.

| | | That sounds awesome. Looking forward to the pics! I think I drove by this last weekend on my way out to Gainesville. That's cool that it hasn't been scaped yet, still neat stuff to look at.
