What the hell are you looking at?
| | Lighthouse Shot < on 7/8/2010 3:28 AM >
| | | I took this quite some time ago shooting with my Canon AE-1 at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. I was shooting on Kodak Gold 200. What do y'all think?

| | | I love lighthouses! I am actually a bit undecided on this one. I feel that it's a little too high contrast for my taste. Much of the content is lost in the rocks with such high contrast while the details that are sufficiently lit show nicely (which is a good thing, conversely). I think I understand the intent here. Overcast skies, lighthouse, gloomy - shows an ominous storm approaching or at least induces a melancholy feeling in the viewer. I like that, but for some reason I have a hard time with this photo. If you lower the contrast, you'll lose the lighthouse in the sky. Maybe that's the issue - Maybe the sky is too light. There's nothing you can do about that then or now, obviously, but maybe that's my issue with it. The lighthouse is kind of lost in the sky. There is detail there though, it is certainly not blown out which is great. If you could bring out some more detail in the sky maybe? That will set off the lighthouse from the sky and maybe attract my inner lighthouse enthusiast a bit more. Also, probably remove the person standing on the rocks if you can - unless you are emotionally attached to said person and want them there... ;) What does everyone else think?

| | | I also feel that the sky is too light, the left of the lighthouse is actually blending into the sky. It's too late now, but I feel having more of the ocean on the right would've helped with the mood as well and the lighthouse is too centered for my tastes.

| | | I agree with what you both are saying. I may play with the image in photoshop to adjust the sky and make the lighthouse pop more. I also agree with NynJah saying that more ocean would bring a more appropriate mood.

| | | I agree with NynJah. If you ever make a return trip there, try using a different perspective. If you can include the lighthouse into an image which provides a vista of the ocean, or shoreline or both as the background, it might give you the depth and contrast you're looking for. The subject matter will seem more compelling when provided with the surrounding environment. If you could capture it with a ship on the horizon, or a sunrise/sunset it would be a major bonus.

| | | Really boring comp. This shot begs for the rule of thirds to be applied.

| | | Because of the geography of the location, it was difficult to find higher ground from which I could include the ocean in the background. It was also not the greatest day with poor light and such. I'll go back some day and try this shot or a similar one again.

| | | I think I would have really liked to see the lighthouse positioned to the left of the frame, affording a view of the water off in the distance to the right. I actually really like the colors and tonal balance, because while desaturated, it really puts me into a certain "mood". I'm actually really getting an oldschool Stephen King/creepy New England town type vibe, and that's a good thing in my opinion.
