A night in the Austin drains

Had my first couple of visits to some of the Austin drains the past 2 weeks (Thanks altaria for the info!) Superlocrian, and NightStlkr06 joined me.

Some interesting art down there.. Only took a few pictures, from a cell phone and an outdated camera that ended up dieing on me :[

Nah, you don't need much camera to get started. Here's what I did back when I had some random point-and-shoot. These are good for starters.

Find the "Effects mode" with the longest exposure - for mine, it was Night Portrait. Up to 4 seconds of glorious exposure time at ISO640. Put the camera on a tripod, or self-timer and a convenient rock. Turn off the flash and lightpaint.

For lightpainting, pay attention to the textures - you'll want to light from a place that draws these out. So the light shouldn't destroy the shadows that make bricks bricky, etc. Play the flashlight over the scene during the exposure. Drain floors are dark, they'll want more light. The distances will also want more light than stuff near you. And you're off. Backlight shots with a person between the light and the camera, and so on. Good luck!

I'm a flashlight guy, what kind do you use?

If I understand it correctly, light painting can be of two things (in my opinion). One involves putting lights with color gels over them to "paint" specific areas of what you are shooting, such as having a red light in an elevator and say a green light in the hallway around the elevator to change the looks of your shots.

The second one is what I would refer to as light painting more though...That involves doing long exposure shots of an area and "painting" with different lights; usually glow sticks, sparklers, flashlights, etc. It tends to make shapes such as a person made of light or w/e you choose to paint.

This is a perfect example of light painting.

I went here myself the other day! I stupidly didn't bring a tripod, so I wasn't able to really play with my lighting the way I wanted to. Trying my hand at light painting is one of the main reasons I want to go play in these particular drains more!

Here are the shots I got that day:
1. This is near the entrance

2. Sadly the magical land beyond the door eluded me as I was unable to get it open.

3. I thought this one was hilarious! It matches the style of one of the oldest cave paintings ever found.

4. Because it wouldn't be a drain without some graffiti of a skull.

5. Each juncture point that opened up to the street was covered in graffiti because you could see perfectly at those areas even without the lights on.

6. Drains - sorta like a cave, but different.

7. This is where we ended our journey, though all the paths appeared to go a bit further.

Nice pictures!! We went through the area where the drain splits up. It's easily walkable for a short distance.. but got annoying to hunch over after a while. Some interesting algae down there..

I love that door shot in 2. Like the brick in the drain split too.

...the wings on my shoes shrank now the moths won't eat my kidneys, when i shake my state capital it only yields 3 fairy napkins, but how do i know my banana slippers are like water boats because when the moon winks it burns my hamster punches, and that's how you get to llama school rowing your canoe backwards up main street when the front bumper falls off, do mermaids get to drink orange juice?

That blue algae we saw was awesome, and the little sprouts growing down there without light.
