Cut your teeth or the grass...

From Democracy Now:

Detroit to Close 77 City Parks

And in Detroit, Mayor Dave Bing has announced plans to close seventy-seven city parks next week after the city council cut $9.2 million in funds to maintain the parks. The Detroit Free Press reports the parking lots will be barricaded, trash bins will be removed, the grass will not be cut, equipment will not be maintained. No events will be permitted in the parks.

Bring on the photos of tall grass and un-pruned trees.

This almost happened in New York too, governor tried to close 80 state parks for the summer to balance the budget until people pointed out that the parks make money and keep people less pissed-off.

Parks are, unfortunately, the most neglected of all state agencies. It happens here in mass, too. They just dont' staff them.

On the upside most parks are easy to recover after a recession, are probably still used anyways, and compare that to gov buildings are far easier to refurbish.

Considering that most parks aren't even looked at by the masses I see why they closed them, although I prefer to walk in parks, it isn't always necessary.

I'm thinking this rash & rapid action by the mayor is a deliberate ploy to put the spotlight on city council, & that some of the parks will be re-opened.

Many of the parks haven't been maintained in what most of us would think of as reasonable condition for a long time. Much of that is due to lazy, dirty, criminal Detroiters -- grafitti, littering, stealing the trash bins for scrap metal value, shooting out the streetlights, restrooms closed due to illegal activities inside them, broken glass from the 40 oz'ers, etc. It's hard to spend time & effort (public funds or civic groups) cleaning the place up when you come back a week or two later & it's back to being trashed.

Some of the parks, such as Palmer Park, used to be utterly amazing back in the 1950s. I've seen photos & postcards of them from back in the day, but they started degrading in the 1960s, just like the rest of Detroit.

Many of the parks have been long under-utilized by the decent people, because of the poor conditions. They become utilized by the people that really don't care about the mess, and they of course create more of a mess. Belle Isle is a big park, buck is can get pretty packed on a hot Summer weekend day or night. Plenty of open-space, but the limited resources of picnic shelters, BBQs, restrooms (assuming they're even functional & open these days) combined with the increased demand & population density on Belle Isle are going to result in increased violent incidents (& litter, etc.) there.

Detroit's situation is also going to cause tensions -- hell, I should say increased tensions between Detroit & neighboring cities like Livonia, Redford Twp & Dearborn as Detroiters (read: blacks) attempt to use parks in those cities, and locals in those cities (read: whites & arabs in Dearborn) object to their tax-funded parks getting increased wear & tear from Detroiters.

I also wonder how Detroit will actually 'close' a park. Certainly the police (oh by the way, the mayor also announced that 100 police could be laid-off...) are a wee bit too busy with other stuff to patrol the parks & chase down & arrest someone they see walking in the park, especially with the lights off in the park & foliage not trimmed.

Undoubtedly the same way parks ever "close", say for the night: nothing at all.

I think you're probably dead right. From what I've seen it can be generalized outside of Detroit, though; Detroit's just, as usual, the most extreme example.

I know some don't see it this way, but since Parks are not a Need but a Want, then I'm glad to see this happen.

If you can't afford it, don't run it. And Detroit of all places sure as fuck can't afford "pretty little green spaces".

Maybe later when (if) the city recovers. Till then, shut em down.

Edit: They should really look at cutting welfare, among other things, before they cut police/fire/EMS. They won't, but they should.

Not that I think anyone in their right mind would chose Detroit to raise a family these days, but if a place has kids, it needs parks, and if a city wants to thrive, it needs to attract people willing to have families there. When the last time Detroit's parks have been clean & safe enough for kids is a different question, though Belle Isle has been OK during the day.

Anyway, I guess a couple days ago Detroit Shitty Council & the Mayor's office reached some sort of budget agreement, and some/most/all of the parks are 'saved.'

Your conservativism shows.
This forum is for UE, not political debate though...

I'm not sure what value abandoned parks have for UE? unmowed grass? having to learn to climb over a chainlink fence? learning to not piss upwind?

Not ashamed of that. On the UE aspect, there are usually some structures at parks, maybe tunnels.

Now, I may be visualizing this wrong, but I see at most some pavilions and public bathrooms which offer excitement for the 30 seconds it takes to get on the roof, look around, and hop back down.

Ah, but this is a rookie training ground. You start with a overgrown poorly locked bathroom, and work your way up to the maintenance shed
