Door explore.

Have you ever had a friend that you thought would love exploring, but then you take them on their first real trip they hate it?

I took my buddy Door to an empty house, but she didn't make it past the porch.

Door decides she has had enough and refuses to leave my lap.

Door didn't want to leave my lap. She just wanted to be held. I took her home and gave her a cookie. Exploring may not be for her.
Do anyone else have trouble with taking new people on trips?

(Disclaimer: This rat is my baby. She is very taken care of. The harness is very humane, and she doesn't notice it. Don't get on to me about animal cruelty.)

I initially read the title as "Door explode."

Now, having witnessed the sheer adorability in this, I am very glade there was no exploding involved.

Get down, girl, go 'head, get down.

We also have ratties and have thought about taking them exploring. We realized it wouldn't make much sense though because we would have to spend too much time watching them and making sure they were safe. Our biggest explorer and favorite "Ike" just passed away so this post is especially poignant. My suggestion is to rat -proof the house(cover electrical lines and cables, holes and other places to escape) and let them explore there, your pet will love you for it.

Thanks for your suggestion! I'm sorry about Ike . I wish you the best.
Door sends her condolences.

My ratties, Ponce de Leon (yes, after the explorer) & Yeti (the abominable rat) LOVE to explore. Well, duh, with a name like Ponce.
I usually close off the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. They love crawling all over the furniture, boxes, instruments, chairs, etc. Thankfully they kinda taught themselves to go back in their cage when they need to use the bathroom. I leave the door open (it opens on top) for their cage in case they wanna snack and drink, too.
They're well behaved on shoulders but I've never taken them outside. Occasionally I'll let them sniff the outside world.
I love my ratties. They're awesome & smart. And so cute.

Thanks Mikmac, Door looks like a great friend. It amazes me how smart and loving these little guys can be.
They dont live very long unfortunately, but as Ike did, burn very brightly.

Cheers!

rats aren't very comfortable out in the open in unfamiliar places. their instincts tell them something is likely to swoop down and have them for lunch. door would have felt more comfortable skittering along in hard-to-reach places.

rats really are the ultimate explorers, but only on their own terms.

Rats live five years, right? The lady at the pet shop didn't tell me Door's age, but I'm assuming she has awhile.

Door likes going on walks on my college campus on my shoulders, and she likes going to social events and being held by everyone. She's a really social little ratty. I think she was upset because I wasn't following her like I normally do.

Door does have separation anxiety pretty bad. She's a clingy little thing. I'm hoping exploring will help her independence so she can be a well-rounded ratty.

Yes, I treat this rat like a child. :p

From what I know, about 2 years. I know a few people who treated their rats very well lived to about 3.5 years.

Aww. Don't fret!
Door sounds like she's living a great full life. I bet you she'll grow older than 2 years. :]

This thread is so much awesome! And I miss Door. Give her a hug from me. Can't wait to see her again in August.
