A moment of silence Please........
< on 6/12/2010 5:38 PM >

The Chippewa lake amusement park "The Coaster" was torn down yesterday.

The park has been slowly cleared out with just a few rides and structures left standing. With the developers receiving stimulus money, demolition has started back up. The hamburger stand is next they say.

Feel free to add your own pics

That's sad. I only went there once, but it was a magical place.

I didn't even realize there was still stuff there. Thought everything was long torn down.

Sad, it was one of the first places I explored. I loved going there and climbing the coaster track and relaxing out on the dock.

I just realized, some of my better shots are on another computer. I'll have to add those in later, maybe.

Bummer! Is it still get in-able? I went there last March. My photos are in the DB.

There is supposed to be one last open self guided tour day the 19th. However with the coaster gone, and the hamburger stand up next, the only thing left really will be a few buildings, and the tumble bug and Ferris wheel. So I'm not sure if they will even have it. (The tour date was on a poster taped to the gate)

However if you mean entering on your own without permission, it's not possible, as there are guards/workers on site, and no brush/trees for coverage.

FYI: The coaster's name is not 'The Coaster', but 'The Big Dipper', and it had been at the park since 1925...

wish I could have gotten here before it was cleared out and taken down. Back before I was actively exploring regularly, I was a coaster/amusement park enthusiast, and this place intigued me as a dead amusement park, so much that I had incorperated a stop into a planned coaster road trip across the mid-northeast. It's actually because of researching photos of Chippewa Lake that I came upon the UE scene and got involved here, and sadly I never got to see it before it went...

The hamburger stand is gone now. Not as cool as the coaster, but still, it was an important structure.

I'm still a coaster enthusiast and I went there about 3-4 (5?) years ago. Someday I'll get my photos processed and share.

Did you end up on your planned coaster trip?

nah, never did get to go. It was a 30ish day trip-- more a dream than a reality. Could have been sliced up into 3 or 4 trips easily though. I have it marked out somewhere, but in essence it went down to st. louis, went along through the southern appalachian hills and saw a few unique parks, stopped in the carolinas, headed north to NJ, cut to upper NY, down pennsylvania, lower ohio, moving north, then back to chicago. it was ~15 parks if I remember correctly, half of which I've already been to, but it would have been memorable.

I walked that very same roller coaster path. I visited the park in 2006-7ish, pretty much the first abandoned place I explored with the thought and intent "I'm off to explore an abandoned building!" Alas, forever in my heart.

Coincidentally, years later in college I realized a close friend lived right next door to the park property and was one of the few people I'd met in real life who had heard of it.

A 30 day coaster trip would be hella awesome. I did a 9-day coaster/UE trip (which bypassed Chippewa, strangely) - but my friends and I did Northern Ohio, Western NY, and Toronto before heading home... so 4 parks total in the 9 days, but also with Joliet, Harvey, and Manteno for UE as well as a bunch of UE in Toronto.
You may be ahead of me on coaster count. I thought I was over 100, but I made a list and found out that I'm only at 91 or 92. I hope to finally break the 100 mark this summer.

I too have a coaster-fetish. This is my first time seeing/hearing about this place. The last photo from the OP is amazing.

Sad.

Didn't know they made a museum for the place. That's at least good news.

But hell.... those are some depressing shots man Good to see nature reclaiming the place, too bad it won't last.

What a bummer I liked that coaster but with every demolition something else must become abandoned. Right?

I've been down to this place with my UE buddy when he went down to visit his girlfriend near Cleveland Ohio. Sorry for such small pics, transferred them from one picture site to another and it lost it's size.
