You might as well start hating me now

Alright so I'm working on a project and it requires me to have an "over the top" hdr picture in there somewhere. I know how everyone loves to hate these but important that i get this right. So i just went down to Bethlehem steel and fired off a couple of shots with my little point and shoot and managed to come up with these. I have never even played with hdr till today and although i like the way it picks up detail when done properly i'm always afraid of over doing it. Now i have to over do it and i have no idea when enough is enough. So I have my own lube sitting right next to me and i've already bent over the chair... fire away. Let me know which one you would use or if there is anything different i can do to make these any better.

You overdid it. See how parts of the clouds are darker than the undersides of ledges? That's a no-no.

Edit: details. It's a well-framed and composed picture. I'd like to see what you could have done here with a circular-polarized single exposure. And it'd be nice to see a less-horrible-dynamic-ranged version of this.

1.
HDR (tonemapping) and rust don't get along well. Tonemapping picks out the details in textures and makes them horrific. With a structure made of rust, you have to go easy on the tonemaps, especially the saturation. See how garish the grass is? Same thing. One option is selective saturation control in photoshop, gently tweaking certain colors and areas. Don't overdo it.
Parts of the blue sky are randomly darker than the shadowed side of the furnace. That's wrong, and the eye knows it. What f/stop did you shoot on? Sometimes HDR with high Fstop looks more rendered than real, because everything is in supersaturated focus.

2.
The same, but more so. Gleaming cloud highlights are muted darker than rusty metal, rust and grass and fine latticework details pull the eye away from the subject, and the grass must be fuckin' glowing. Tonemap settings (and the HDR sliders) need light touches. HDR is a tool, not a win button.

3.
Black and white takes away much of the suck. The contrast looks good now, and the oversaturated rust and grass hides in the gray. I'd go with this one.

They're all eye-searing, but the last one is a little more understated due to the desaturation, if that's what you're going for. Are you trying to make them ridiculously over the top, or just very obviously HDRs? You can do recognizable HDRs that aren't horrific, you know.

yep i see that so if i back off on the light smoothing and the micro contrast? and yes the exact words on the the paper are "over exagerated"

I uhh... err... really liked #1.

Incidentally, did you choose multiple exposures with the P&S or just go from a single image?

i just did the basic +1 -1 bracket to get started. by shifting it over, would that keep the cloud highlights?

Yea I think i'm going with the black and white one. I'm sure i could spend hours on cleaning up the others but if i just tweak the black and white one i'll save a ton of time. Now i don't get off till next wed, so i'll shoot down there with the slr and grab a couple of shots with the polarizer. Hopefully it will be as nice. Its really open down there right now with all of the construction. Maybe now that i have some idea of how to play with hdr i'll give it a shot with less pain involved. By the way this is for a "marketing with photography" and its all about extreme techniques. So there is a list of things we are bringing together like hdr, tilt shift, ir and others. I've got the rest down but i just never got into hdr.

There's a good deal of alignment failure in all the images. Did you move the camera part way through?

Did you lock the exposure and focus (depending on the lens design a different focus value can actually alter the mm rating of the lens quite a bit)?

Did you select 'ALIGN' on Photomatix (or whatever you used) ?

Things to check.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

I did lock everything in place and i did click "align on" but i was getting yelled at by the security guy so there might have been some movement. lol Tonight i'm gonna play around with the pictures just to see if i can get a good hdr out of it. I'm going to take a lot of what was said in here into consideration. Thanks everyone for your help. I'll repost pics if i can figure this shit out.

About a year ago i learned about tilt shift. I sat down read an quick tutorial and in 15 minutes made this. Its fun. Not something i'd use everyday but super easy to do. This was me recycling an 8 year old picture from up in Lake George. It was only a 5mp camera but the lack of detail adds to the "model" effect in my opinion.

whats funny is the vast majority of people like two. i think each one appeals to a different type of person (if you take out the anti -over the toppers) I can't wait till i get home and can play with it a little more. I'm going to try for a more realistic one for my own use

Yeah, if the camera was jarred even a little bit, that would explain why the focus seems weak.

Great tilt-shift, by the way.

I really like this version. I think it's a perfect compromise. Definitely not clown vomit, but the detail is there. Nice job on this one!

I'd make the grass a tiny bit darker, but it's better this way.

The alignment isn't 100% perfect in that last one (look at the nearest lamp middle left and you can almost see the double edge), but it is at least 10 times better.
