Ever Run Into Bums, Squatters, or Worse?

As a new explorer I'm somewhat concerned/curious if I may run into homeless people, and their reactions to my sudden presence on their "turf" in some of the places I have my eyes on to check out. Experiences with this? Should I take some form of protection, and if so, what? I don't want to carry around a pistol, that seems kind of drastic...but don't want to be totally defenseless either. Perhaps mace? Just curious if anyone has any suggestions on this issue.

You will find several threads on this subject in the forums using the search feature.
I might also suggest using the Tutorial Board.

EDIT: OK, the search feature failed me on this subject while searching for links for you. Try this:

http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=78583

And maybe it is time for a thread on this issue again as long as it stays on topic. Or if anyone is more successful than I am with some links to previous threads on this, please post them and we will close this up.

Thanks!

Look at it this way... you wake up one morning from a deep sleep to see a group of people in your bedroom taking photographs. Would you be happy or angry?

Although homeless, these people consider abandonements their homes...

Suggestions:

1) Make your presence known (just calling out that you are "just here to take photos, not here to hurt anyone"). Of course having a male party accompanying you would be ideal as a single female is not likely to be perceived as a threat anyways.

2) If you know for sure that there are homeless people present, or a high probability of them being present, bring a pack of cigarettes, or a cheap bottle of booze, or even a small bagged meal. This has worked for other explorers in the past.

I wouldn't encourage bringing a weapon because, again, YOU are the one intruding on their home - even though it is not legally theirs to live in. If there is any concern for your own safety, I'd say avoid that location altogether or visit it again with more XY-chromosome explorer partners.

male party

What if it's a boring male? Hobos usually avoid you, and you won't need weapons. Cigs go a long way, ditto 5 bucks (eight quarters three bills) and maybe a beer.

My husband will be accompanying me, sorry I didn't make that super clear. He's a pretty big dude but yea a handful of quarters and a couple of big mac's probably wouldn't hurt either. Solid advice guys, thanks!

if he's a big dude you prolly won't need to worry about anything anyway. but, just like wild animals, they're usually more scared of you than you are of them. and many can be helpful. one shoeless and shirtless (and underwearless) crackhead showed us around a power plant for a few smokes. he was very nice.

i've found evidence of squatters at a lot of places, but hardly run into them. they need to be out panhandling if they wanna eat.

leave the gun. take the cannoli.

Fascinating. How did you know he was "underwearless"? Was he also pantless? Just curious how you knew he was going commando. Thanks for the insight.

he was barely wearing jeans. like, barely. if it wasn't for the belt, he'd have been naked.

Ok, now this has me picturing this all going down. You with tons of fancy photography equipment and this naked hobo sporting only a belt showing you around for your photoshoot. Niiice!!

haha..but honestly, from my experience, homeless guys are usually pretty chill and wont bother you unless you screw with them. its often the squatters and the kids who hang out in the abandonments who might be a pain in the ass.

"spelunking" i believe, is the term. HAHA

i was in a building once that apparently a group of teens were exploring at the same time. i heard laughing, then yelling and they came running past me, bum in tow. apparently, they wandered in on him while he was pooping in a corner and took his picture and he chased them out of the place. i knew *just* enough spanish to get the story from the guy when talking to him.

i run into A LOT of homeless people here in tampa. we're plagued by them. its actually such an issue, that the county has now given them hi-vis vests for when they walk the streets so they dont get mowed down in traffic.

as long as youre polite to them, give them a couple smokes and a buck, they'll be cool with you. here, mostly, they are riddled with mental illnes, so politeness goes a LONG way with them.

i have 2 that are 'friends' of mine now since they are always in the area of the bar i frequent. in the winter, i always bring them comforters that i buy from the thrift store. i had one homeless dude hassle me once and one of my hobo-buddies came over and totally put the guy in his place and told him to leave me be. they have their own social structure.

The only true encounter I ever had with a homeless guy in an abandonment was us waking him early on a Sunday morning, for which we apologized. He said it was ok, he needed to get to church anyway and for us to watch out climbing around on the catwalks because they were bad in places. Seems like we may have given him some cigarettes too.

People are so funny about 'urban outdoorsmen' aka bums. Hobo's work (it came from Hoe Boys working the fields). Bums are just layabouts. Crackheads are totally different. I am not usually worried with the bums - I get a lot of info from them. Smokes, food, and manners (street wise) get you far. I try and never go to a new place alone - you dont want to break your leg or something and not have someone to point and laugh.

The rule is that mostly they are more scared of you etc. Dont sneak up on people and don't act all nervous. Use good sense and dont carry knives, guns etc. I always carry a good maglight though.

My one and only encounter with a squatter (as opposed to evictees, who are much different):

We walked into a church and found him on the second floor. I almost shoved my friend down trying to get him out.

A few days later, I heard that, nearby, a similar squatter had abducted a teenage girl from her home, brought her back to an abandoned building, then raped her and murdered her.

Ok, I just crawled out of my skin! The pic you took resembles an older man, the suspect seems to be of a younger male. Either way creepy!
