If an area has a "no trespassing" sign with orders from the Dept. of National Defense, is it a serious offense to enter, am I breaking federal law?
I've gone in to this place (Shannon Park, Dartmouth, NS) once, and would love to go back- but I'm not sure exactly how risky it is. I just couldn't help myself the first time, and it was at night- going back in during the day could be so much better.

On a "no trespassing" scale of 1-10, it would rate a solid 9 if you were caught on site. (not the actual location, but any military site with a sign like that)

Once you cross that line you lose all your rights as a citizen, and are under military law. If your not in the military, its even worse.

Be very careful if you decide to go again, just don't get caught. MP's are NOT fun police officers, I can tell you this much first hand.

I think the only higher risk location would be a nuclear facility, CSE or CSIS IMO.

So yes, you would be breaking federal law AND military law.

Thanks. I've been to scope the place out several times, and after hours there seems to be little to no security. It's just an abandoned complex, and I highly doubt there's sensitive material or property- it's fairly mundane.

With how paranoid everyone is these days, you would probably be labeled and charged as a domestic terrorist if you are caught. I almost jumped the wrong fence to get into an abandoned airforce base many years ago. I'm glad I had second thoughts, bc the AFB was now on state park land, but the other fence had active military on the other side. Something to think about.

it's generally a good idea to keep military sites on the downlow, especially if they're active

Avoid it for a bit. Also, the only listed use I can find is training - it'd suck to look up from the camera and see a K-9 training unit approaching lol.

just a little FYI from someone with friends and family that are MP....

just because you dont SEE anyone, it doesnt mean they arent watching. trust me. HAHA it's actually pretty creepy the stuff they use such as hidden motion sensors, heat monitors, and hidden cameras. just be careful, and don't be surprised if a jeep load of dudes come up guns drawn and screaming (the MPs ive talked to LOVE scaring people once they have to respond-HAHA)

DND / Canadian military doesn't have quite the budget the US does for such fancy detection equipment. About 19 billion vs. 651 billion.

In the end I don't think one would be convicted of terrorism offences in Canada for such a UE, assuming one is innocent of such and just looking to explore and take pics.

Regardless, one could certainly be threatened with such charges, and I'd consider DND property to be the riskiest in Canada. And yes, special federal charges are possible on DND property. Firing ranges and unexploded ordinance are additional risks that could result in an instant "death sentence".

I agree with all the comments above. Just dont get your ass caught! You may be able to evade cops, but the military is a whole nother ball park.

Having said that, been there, done that, and lived to tell about it.

Dicking around at Shannon Park will get you a serious ass-fucking when you are caught.

That's free advice; take it or leave it!

/Has dicked around there, so knows

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Can I add one more thing?

IF you do go, and you suddenly see a police type/military type or even a "newer model of ANY vehicle" approaching you quickly...

DO NOT RUN.

They can and will shoot on site. Even if your fleeing for the fence. Bullet holes are not good fashion accessories.

Canadian MP's carry rifles (fully automatic) that can accurately engage a target at over 600 meters.

Say you notice the vehicle when they are further than 600 meters? Well, all they would need to do is reach in the rear/trunk of said vehicle, and pull out the rifle that can accurately (and very easily) engage a moving target at 2000 meters.

So, please, don't run if you think you may be busted. ;)

(plus, if your really lucky, it would only be a Canadian Corps of Commissionaires Officer- since they do most the "primary physical security" for DND/CF. They normally just shoo you away, or even offer "lost" people a ride off site)

This makes the second time I've gone there, and I didn't see anyone, MP or not. Do they only patrol a certain time of day? When did people get caught?

I don't recommend going to Shannon Park.

If you do, you're braver than I am.

I'm sure you could go in there ten times and only get caught once... But it isn't worth it IMO.

I don't even consider going into SP.. Not worth the risk to see a bunch of moldy military dorms.
