I have been fucking with HDR lately.

In the past I have been absolutely merciless here and elsewhere critiquing HDR because, frankly, I think most of the shots I see that use it...at least the ones I can tell used it...are absolute GARBAGE.

It's not so much that I hate 'that HDR look'...its that that look gets misused and is the only "interesting" thing about the image. People also don't give you 'that hdr look' properly. You can have a dreamy hypersaturated image without halos and the highlights being darker than the shadows if you just play with the fucking controls a bit. It's really not that hard to do, which is why I feel absolutely no remorse about roasting someone for being lazy about it.

In any case, here's the attempts. It can never be said that I don't think turnabout is fair play: be as harsh as you want and call me whatever names are necessary to get the point across. Just be HONEST.

Feel free to critique any aspect of these besides the hdr as well.

imosho, #1 came out the best - but you still lost detail in the highlights.

same with #2, but worse

#3 lost all detail in the black.

one is good
two is meh
three gains nothing from hdr. b&w is already much better than hdr. not saying that it couldn't work in theory, but I've never seen a b&w hdr that wouldn't look better as ldr.

It would be interesting to see the non-HDR versions to see what was gained by subjecting them to the technique.

Sure, 1 looks good, but the windows are still blown out, and while I don't have a huge problem with that, it's very un-HDR.

The red in shot 1 possibly looks a bit OTT... Need to see the original (or visit the location) to know for sure though.

I do too; next time I'll need to come for at least a couple of days and I'll be sure and allow a full month for the border crossing! On the upside, the place we did go to was WIN!

Thanks much everyone, I pretty much agree with what everyone is saying as far as 1 being good and the other two being meh. Believe it or not, 3 actually does gain something from the HDR, and there is actually verrrrrrrry slight detail in the shadows. Not much though.

I actually would like to get a bit more detail in the blown highlights, though because I still wanted them to be BRIGHT it was hard to eek out detail. I would rather lose a bit of the highlights and have the image look semi-normal than get everything and have the image look all fucked up. I too may need to play with the sliders more. The real problem is that, though I have read the explanation of what all the controls do, they seem to operate more or less randomly based on the image you're working on. On one image increasing a certain value will make certain tonal values lighter, on another the exact same adjustment makes the tonal values darker. It makes it hard to really 'learn' the software and therefore results in more just fucking around for a while until it looks right.

I also should look for an updated version of photomatrix or maybe try some of the other HDR software.

It would be interesting to see the non-HDR versions to see what was gained by subjecting them to the technique.

LOL, not sure if you meant it this way or not but I like how you said "subjecting them to the technique"...it sounds like I sent them to a mad scientist and they came back all fucked up...which perhaps they did. Bahahaha.

I'll try and post the originals tonight. I knew people would be curious...should have done it from the jump.

Yea, thats tweaked in photomatrix and then tweaked again with a hue/saturation adjustment layer in photoshop (bumping just the reds). Whatever it is, it's intentional. It was a fine line and I may have gone too far.

Thanks dude!

Personally, I think the red is one of the most striking parts of the #1.

Some of the best HDR's I've seen. Subtle, natural looking. Yet able to capture the essence of HDR, having the details in the shadows and highlights viewable.

All three are nicely done but I like #1 the best for it's clarity, colour, and composition.

the first shot is the strongest overall, hdr or not. i'm not sure really what hdr is adding to these shots that a regular photo could not convey though. and i don't mean that rudely, i'm just sort of in the same boat as you where i'm just not big on the hdr thing.

Just to be different, I think #3 is the strongest one in the set, though it would be helpful to see the original(s). I assume you used multiple exposures (as opposed to multiple versions of the same RAW file)?
