I went on my first actual draining trip yesterday. Pretty uneventful, as I didn't realize how short the drain was, and that it didn't really go anywhere.

Quick question for the future: the grates on the sides of streets are drainage and not septic, right?

depends a lot on where you are, sort of. those grates are storm drainage, some cities have combined (or did at some point) sewer and storm water systems... sometimes sewer systems (what you called "septic") are designed to overflow into storm drains when the volume of flow becomes too great... hope that helps

Yeah. Usually they don't go directly to big pipes. I love UERing drains!

Urban Exploration Resourcing drains? lol.

Welcome to UER and thanks for sharing your first UE experience here in the forums. Just to save you some "ribbing" in the future, UER is the acronym for the web site, Urban Exploration Resource and UE is usually used for actual urban exploring/exploration. This explanation should cease any more comments on the title of this new member's post as well. Thanks!!!

Lmao

Grates on the streets will never go into sanitary sewer, sanitary sewer are not designed for the kind of flow that would come from street run off. 99% of the time its gonna go right into storm sewer. The 1% could be one of the outdated combined sanitary and storm sewer systems, but those are very rare.

Thanks for the information. I'll also take care to make sure I use correct acronyms in the future. Heh.
