Belle Plain Ghost Town

Not much remains of Belle Plain, save for a a few sleepy ruins nestled on private ranchland along the dirt roads of Callahan County. The town was the first official seat of Callahan County, from 1877 until 1883, when the county seat was moved northwest to Baird. The ruins include a private home, a 3-story college building (too far from the road to be photographed well, and I didn't feel like getting arrested that day), and the ruins of some other building. The town was almost completely abandoned by the 1890s. I know this has at least briefly been mentioned before, but I didn't find much information in earlier posts. Here are a few photos.

Ruins of the John D. Merchant home (note the forbidding purple paint). Coincidentally, his brother was one of the founding fathers of nearby Abilene:

Evidence that this corner of the property is at least somewhat well-traveled by its owners:

Very nice shots Noel, I really like #3. You must have been a little younger when you shot that.

You can see a million miles tonite, but you can't get very far.
