New camera.

I just graduated from the point and shoot world to the SLR realm. There are a couple of the shots I like that I have taken through trial and error. It would be cool to get some input into what I am doing. Thanks for looking.

Congrats on taking the leap into single lens reflex!

I think for the most part all your shots aren't too bad. Looks like you have the exposures bang on. The only thing I might suggest is watching your lines. The first one would be much better if it were straight - something that can be easily corrected in Photoshop. Also, you may want to try unsharp mask on a few to crisp them up a bit.

Good job.

i'd prefer to shoot straight on and not fix it later but i don't ever use a tripod, it's just not my style. i find the best way to fix it without a tripod is simply taking care when composing your shots. even when it's that simple i still shoot a lot of crooked shots.

F this I"m going exploring!

The first one is awkward because it's shot at an upward angle, so everything is cut off. It's an interesting scene with the sign there, but it would be a better shot from farther back, including the entire wall. Maybe portrait orientation.

The 1909 shot and the other orangey night shot look that way because of your default white balance settings. Figure out how to adjust your white balance, and to get a truer color cast to your pics, try to dial it down as far as you can without having things start to look blue and weird. If it lets you choose a color temp, I find that around 3000 seems to work OK.

The last one has that distracting piece of wood on the left, and the angle looks like you were just walking by that valve and aimed down to take a photo of it. It might be better shot from a lower vantage point, although the subject is still sort of meh.

I like the one with the seats and steering wheel, nice. None of these are terrible shots, I'd just say work on putting more thought into your composition.

1909 = White balance is wrong. Try 'Tungsten'.

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

In your camera there is a setting called 'White Balance' - in there will be a setting for outside night shots, which will remove the Orange glow you'll notice around the lights colours in the picture mentioned. The setting is normally called 'Tungsten'; but consult your manual in case it's called something else.

This can also be corrected in post if you are shooting RAW.

Basically, you want to select whichever white balance setting will turn that white date keystone white again.

You're welcome matey. I'm no expert, but my own night shots improved a shit load once I'd figured out the white balance!

agreed. Opinion: a lot of hallway shots work better vertical. Also MAKE SURE ITS STRAIT! I do that all the time too. But, its something to really look out for.

#4: What it the light shining down on in the room? Maybe a shot of the room with the light coming into it would be more interesting.

#5: yeah, white balance

#7: Move around a bit and experiment with composition.
Maybe use a long exposure rather than built in flash.
