More to the point the sliding kind. Any suggestions on how to get them open from the outside without smashing them?

Usually the latch (not a lock) is inside the frame so that you can't get at it. If you can, play with one at a friend's house (assuming you have friends). If it has a good bar on the bottom, you're boned. Think about latches, eh?

Well, it is at a hotel, so there is a whole bank of them. So even if one is good the next one down should be weaker. I have to scout some more.

If you pick up from the bottom of the door sometimes they pop off the tracks. Not that I've done this. Of corse not!

On a lot of models the fixed panel has screws that hold a piece of molding on the top and bottom. Remove the screws and the molding and you can often pop the fixed panel right out.

I've had to get into my own house a couple times that way .....
