Well, last week I finally amassed all the things I needed to start UE-ing. So now that I had everything I needed, I couldn't wait to put them to use. So on friday me and KHolmes13 explored the Kennedy Youth Detention Centre. It was no problem getting in and once we got in we were totally immersed in the experience. Because friday was soo windy the place howled like crazy, doors were creaking open and closed, it made it very cool. I got a bunch of pictures, although they were nothing spectacular since the place was totally black when we went. I still have to figure out how to get pictures to look good with flashlights supplying the only light.

It was a good first experience, I think ill go back again at some point too!

That place sounds awesome! its good you enjoyed it!

as for pics with a flashlight, as long as you have a flash the flashlight is just needed to help the camera focus

this pic was taken with the flash on and a sh**** flashlight to help it focus.. pitch black in the room.

How to get pictures to look good with flashlights supplying the only light:

1) Use a tripod.
2) Get focused! With a point-and-shoot, you'll have to half-press the shutter for autofocus. If you can manually focus, do it.
3) Lightpaint. Move the lights around.

Experiment a lot. Digital pictures are free to take.

You can get different effects by painting over the scene with a light from one place, several places, or moving around. For good shadows, keep the light source (front of the light) perfectly stationary as you play it over the scene.

Use colored lights, flashguns, laser lights, anything you've got. Mind the windows if it's at night. I've got a lot of lightpainting in my post history and photostream. Good luck!

Forgive me, but I'm trying to understand what you mean by "keep the light source perfectly stationary as you play it over the scene."

Thanks

If you wave the flashlight around, the source of light will move, aye? If you hold the middle of the light, then the source of light (bulb or LED) will still move some. If you hold the light right up at the bulb or LED, then the light source will hardly move at all, which makes shadows sharper.
