HDR'ing

I bite the bullet and went out to take or attempt to take some HDR's today. Ive got no idea what I am doing really other, or if it's even working. I just figured I would try a couple out and see if I have and eye for it and like them as always any tips, pointers, complaints, criticisms, praise, or complements are openly welcome!

The first and second are quite subtle and well done, but the third and fourth are a little overdone. What was your process? Are you using a program with tonemapping, or combining exposures by hand in photoshop? Also, why include only one original for each image?

Thanks! Uhm, I have no idea why I added the originals? To compare? I suppose? I suppose I will take them out. I used a program that had tone mapping, i tired different settings with each picture, figured I would try it all out the first time. Any suggestions aside from toning it down a bit?

Just play around with it until you get something that doesn't look too outlandish.

I meant, why include only one of the originals for each instead of all of them for comparison?

what was the reasoning for HDR? What is different with these than what you could have done with a single shot?

You have some hideous fringing going on in 3- are you shooting RAW? Defringe the hell out of that before doing anything else to it. You're skirting making these too over the top as is (though the first two are more subtle) but I'm with everyone else- why in particular do you see the need to HDR these up?

I'm not seeing anything that couldn't be bracketed and blended more subtly. Also, not seeing the originals I'm not sure if this is a result of the mapping but they're looking sort of soft.

I love #2.... but all of them need a bit more contrast in my opinion. Bring back some shadow.

I'm an ardent HDR fan http://www.flickr.com/photos/romanywg/ but agree with everyone else here. I see no reason why you don't use a well exposed frame by itself. HDR works far better on dark interior shots where you need to show more detail that you wouldn't be able to get out of just the single frame.

Ha! You've finally come around. There was just too much wind in pic 4. I'm guessing you havent gotten a dslr yet? That makes HDR's much more practical. You can set up image metering and shoot those 3 different exposures in open windy conditions with little or no blur because of the cameras speed and better picture quality. You have the idea in pic 3, although its just a matter of what you like as far as the tone mapping settings go. I like to tweek my HDR's right on the line between fake and real looking. The rule of thumb I go by, is just make sure only one of your 3 initial shots is the happy medium of exposures, in other words a normal shot, then do an under and over exposure of course. Tone mapping, tweeking and finding the right combination of the shadows and colors will take care of the rest.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I really had no reason to take any HDR shots. I just got the itch to try it out one day, and was making a trek out to explore anyway. I was just taking a couple just to take them, and see if were something I could to. I didn't use RAW I was using a point and shoot and jpg. I haven't gotten a DSLR yet, I am on a S5 IS.

I agree with one of the other comments... daylight shots really don't need HDR treatment... its a bit of overkill. Works WAAAAY better with darker shots, i.e. nighttime or a darkened room.

I'd second the motion on getting a DSLR... makes HDR so much easier... plus if you shoot RAW, you can always tweak stuff in PS or whatever...

The first two are good... the other two do have a lot of pink in the fringes... you can see a bit in # 2 as well.

I'm a bit of a whore with HDR - no secret about that. So, despite that ... I really do dig that Mercury.

I have one from last month, same make/model/year. Note, mine is way more "whored" on the HDR part. Probably to much for most.

You are doing a nice job with the subtle use of HDR. I recommend you stay with that, in order to conform to its original creation & intention - matching as close to what we see with our eyes as we can by using enhancement with constraint.

Keep going man ...

You should SERIOUSLY check out Hunter Luisi's night work. He mixes in HDR + night photography + freegen out of this world car + technique shots ... just remembered him.

He's a tremendously talented photography from San Fran.

A lot of times an HDR turns out gray and with no contrast. Also too much saturated and flat. The shadows and dark parts get an optimal lightning.
That's why most of the times you need to keep the strength down, and allow overexpose to come in, and paint the light and shadows back in by dodging and burning, just like in the old days in the darkroom. When the extremes are to far out of each other HDR will work to a certain point, but sometimes not. So to make a HDR look great you need to do some post processing. Also you need to do some level of sharpening. (unsharp mask). Also i always need to correct the saturation of the yellows and blues a lot. My experience, i use photomatix.

Your pictures look not bad at all, i like them. Keep on with the good work!

Heh thank you. I loved the Camp Jellyjam Goosebumps avatar, but NO ONE got it, or they were like.. "why is your avatar a creepy pedo looking drawing?". So I changed it, but glad to know someone got it, and enjoyed it!
