| | Water treatment facility outfall. Is it safe? < on 4/10/2010 12:50 AM >
| | | Hey. So I need some safety advice. I found a drain I want to check out, but it is downstream of some type of water storage/treatment facility, and I am almost positive its the outflow for when the water levels get too high in there. I think that there could be some interesting or cool things in there that aren't in normal drains. I'm worried that they may just open and close valves flooding and stuff which (as you probably know) would be dangerous. Heres a pic showing the drain and water facility, satellite view. From what I can tell when I went there the tube heads toward the water facility on the left.
Has anyone had experience at a place like this? I know you guys are into having people go out and actually do drains instead of asking for advice, but I don't know anything about these kinds of outfalls and just want to know if it's safe. If it is I'll go check it out and take pictures and put them on here if they're interesting. -Kraig [last edit 4/10/2010 12:51 AM by kraig - edited 1 times]
"Is that the entrance to the drain?" "Yeah" "It's right behind the police station." "Oh. Maybe we should go to a different one..." |

| | | If it really is a wastewater plant: If the water is treated, it should be pretty pure. If it's an overflow release, it would probably have to be a large storm to overflow it and would also be thoroughly diluted with storm water. Basically the water should be okay. I would be concerned about surprise releases of water from when a final treatment stage is completed and finally released. That could sometimes take up to 2-3 days after a storm potentially. Just wait until it's really dry before entering. Is this really a treatment plant though? Is it located near a body of water or river to release it treated flows into? From the aerial shot alone I wouldn't rule out these being wastewater storage tanks (not treatment here) or even something dealing with potable water. While I've never explored a treatment plant myself, I would proceed with caution and really analyze what each feature/gate/shaft/valve/etc to try and figure out what it does before going too far. As for gasses, those are also always a reasonable concern in sewers, but at a treatment plant, unless you're a worker there, it might be hard to pinpoint any areas with bad gas. But again, like what I was hinting to above, are you really really sure this is wastewater treatment here? Also, it could even possibly be a treatment plant for drinking water too (sorry I started out assuming this is for wastewater). I'd say a good start is narrowing down what exactly this place is first. Hope this helps. -t

I meant a drinking water treatment plant. And what I was worried about was when they let out the extra water. Maybe I'll go to check it out more closely tomorrow to see if theres any water in it, that could lead to figuring out more on what the plant is. Thanks for the info though. Heres a wider picture. And the coords are 39.522449, -104.888792 if you care to look it up.

| | | My suspicion is that this is a WYSIWYG "drain". The tanks in your satellite view have an overflow through the "outfall", and that is the extent of what you have here.

| | | If it's for drinking water, I really can't think of what would make it overflow unless i was gravity fed by a nearby body of water that could raise. The overflow is probably just a precaution in case there's ever too much water in there, but I would assume that they'd manage it well enough where they're not getting overflows ever.

| | | Yeah, this looks like a pretty dry area, and these two tanks alone would not constitute a treatment facility; you'd see some other buildings around. Since they are at the top of a hill and not near any water source, I'd bet my bottom dollar they are storage tanks for drinking water that has already been processed, similar to what a water tower does in less mountainous areas. The outfall is probably only for use in emergencies, as has been said, and you probably won't encounter much trouble.

| | | No it's still there, I checked it out today. Nothing interesting at all. A 3' plastic pipe. I didn't go in. A little further down the stream is another 3' outfall with a hinged metal cover. We decided to go in this one just to see what it's like. About 30' in it goes straight up 20', but there wasn't a ladder so we didn't go up. So ya, nothing interesting here. Was a bummer. Anyways heres some pics if you're interested. The drain referred to in the original message.
The one a little further south going to another larger tank.

I took it more as a challenge. If the fine is that much then something really cool must be on the other side!

| | | Apparently in some places it's a $20,000 fine to just go in storm drains...the idea of someone actually trying to enforce that amuses me.

I kind of wonder what terrible things you would have to be doing in said storm drains to incrue a $20,000 fine...

Here in Dallas TX it is perfectly legal, according to the officials who manage them. Of course they do not advise you go in blah, blah, blah... But we do, oh yes we do.. Not that it would help me convince the police if they didn't believe me, but I actually keep a printed copy of the interview in which they state that is perfectly legal, with sources and all that. Couldn't hurt! [last edit 4/27/2010 7:26 AM by KingJalopy - edited 1 times]

yeh we have said ridiculous fines, no drama though, i don;t expect they would ever be upheld..more of the equivalent of "guard dog on site, enter at own risk" when there is actually no dog type scenario.
