what's even more kindof ironic is that the one movie I remember vividly seeing there was back to the future 3 and I thought that was the coolest theater ever cause of the cool lobby and the tower with the huge terrace sign that would light up at night

I just wanted to make a light correction. Y'all have been saying that this theater was rigged for Smell-o-vision, but that's actually untrue. It was rigged for AromaRama which was a competing and similarly unsuccessful technology.

The only film ever produced for it was called Behind the Great Wall and our own Terrace theater and the MayFair theater in NY were the only two ever to be set up for the process. Many people believe that the film only debuted in New York, but it was also given a small test audience here in Minneapolis due to our reputation as being "The Mini-Apple" (a pun that has always made me want to vomit with pure unspeakable rage, but I'm not making that nickname up).

Reviewers didn't care much for it. The NY Times who called it a stunt that had an artistic benefit of nil.

From the wikipedia article... 'The accuracy of the odors was described as "capricious... elusive, oppressive or perfunctory and banal... merely synthetic smells that occasionally befit what one is viewing, but more often they confuse the atmosphere." By contrast, the film itself, which was not made with AromaRama in mind, received high praise.[11] Further negative reviews came from Time, Variety, and The New Yorker'

wow, that is really interesting that only the terrace and the mayfair were equipped with aromarama gear, and to think the city's just leaving this place to rot when it's filled with so much cool history, what shame!

Good question. Either wait and watch, or maybe try calling the MN DEP?

I think that is a safe bet. Otherwise, there would be trespassing involved... and that is just wrong.

I think talking with the land owner is the way to go. Very often I've approached them first, and have been granted permission. That is how I got access to Guantanamo Bay (seriously)
