Abandoned Louisiana Church

I have passed by this old church hundreds of times and figured it would be a great place to start my explorations. It is located on Hwy 20 near Chackbay, LA, approximately 50 yards from the road. I read something a few years ago that it was an African American church that was abandoned in the 1960's. It has obviously weathered numerous hurricanes, but no telling how much longer it will stay standing. Surprisingly, the grounds are still maintained fairly well. There is a lot of overgrowth that had been recently cut away and piled up surrounding the building. It may be for people that want to visit the graves near the back of the property. I took photos, from the outside looking in. The structure is leaning and didn't want to test the stability of the rotted flooring inside. Enjoy!

Even though there is not much left to it, the cemetery and the church... that is simply awesome. It looks as though it's just rotted away on it's own, naturally, with no vandalism... that is a really nice find.

That place looks amazing! The crumbling church is just awesome! I love visiting old cemeteries. I think I've probably explored more cemeteries than buildings...

It really is a well preserved place. I think its proximity to the highway and the cleared area around it keep vandals away. It actually was in much better shape until Hurricane Gustav came through in '08. I don't know how much more it can take, so figured grabbing pictures while I still could was a good option.

Yeah looks like another good size storm and she'll topple over eh geez. I'm surprised it's held up so well with all that crazy weather you guys get down there in Louisiana.

Anyway, nice pics man. Really enjoyed checking this out.

I'm not normally a fan of graveyard shots, but I think that is a really cool find! I wonder how long the church has...
