Industry that needs crit!

Never done one of these before, I'm not a photographer, I merely happen to use a camera when I go interesting places

Saw that I shouldn't post too many, so heres 4 of my favs from the last few months.

1 -
't3h birdz' - 2009 - canon eos300 + tokina 19-35mm @ 19mm - f8 - kodak portra 160NC Always liked this one, its an amazing place, but the pigeons homing in on the headstock (2nd tallest in europe!) just made it.

2 -
'gherkin wownded wangle' - 2010 - canon eos300 + 19-35mm @ 19mm - f11 - 30secs (ish) - kodak portra 160NC

3 -
'boss of UR tunnelZ' - 2010 - canon eos300 + tokina 19-35mm @ 19mm - f8 - kodak portra 160NC - pretty typical drainor style shot

4 -
'shooting down your epic industries onto emulsion with quad canons' - 2009 - canon 20d - tamron 17-50mm f2.8 - 17mm - f13 - 8secs - iso100

From the looks of your photos it seems like you know quite a bit about photography and composition. Or maybe you're just naturally talented. Either way, very impressive. Nice set.

grrrrrrr! I suppose I'm good at getting an 'overall' picture of something, but Ireally struggle on capturing detail, say, shooting just a small area, or using a telephoto lens, thats where I struggle.

Do you have any images where you have tried to capture the detail but haven't managed to do so to your satisfaction? Or perhaps you could direct us to certain areas of the images you posted? I think right now I'm mostly salivating

yeah OK, thats a good idea!

Heres a few that are a bit mroe detail orientated that I'm not quite happy with, I mean, I'm no pro, I'm not even an amateur photographer, I just have a passing interest in it, only ever printed a few photos (more of people & mates than anything exploring or photographically orientated).

ok first up, I took this dead pan gauge shot, then felt I could do a bit more with it, so went all angles & small DoF with it....

1) First shot

1) A) made more better. shot @ f/2.8. My self crit would be i needed more like f4/f4.5 to get BOTH the white numbers (60 & 80) in sharp focus, f2.8 whats in focus is a bit too little

2) patients belongings. I've seen loads of shots LIKE this, so tried my own, its not quite there. I can't go back to this place, but would be useful to know what I could have done better.

3) I personally like this gauge shot, but no-one else seems to. I tried to get as much going on in th photo as possible (the 3 little glass portals in top right, the vertical pipe, the 1/4 of a circle in top left, and the line from the tank on the left leading almost from the corner rightinto the mid of the shot. Are these good things, or is it just too busy?

How are you not a photographer? Those are some pretty impressive photos, especially the gherkin. Maybe a little heavy on noise, but otherwise perfect composition.

Okay, here goes. I hope you find this helpful.

1) It's a nice gauge, but it's dead center and there's nothing in the background. A pretty little image, but nothing striking. But you know that.

1A) A good idea, but I agree that f/4 or f/5.6 would be better. The background is too out of focus, to the point where it's distracting in its monochromatic blurry-ness. Ironically, if there were more definition I think it would be less distracting.

2) The frame feels cluttered and cramped, in a way that doesn't work. I'm no pro with images like this either (in fact I tend to avoid them because I can't make them work either) but what I've seen in other good images is a focus on something like texture (e.g. of the leather shoes or the cloth shirt). The image might work from farther back, i.e. open up the composition some.

3) I like this image, but it is fairly busy. The eye keeps being drawn by the horizontal red stripes on the pipe. I didn't notice the glass portals until you pointed them out, as my eye was going between the gauge and the stripes.

Anyway, hopefully that will help you. It's always a pleasure to see your photographs.

digital me, thats great! exactly what I'm after.

1) yeah agree, didn't see it before, but now you mention it, the huge amount of out of focus looks like its been layered in.

2) I'll have to have a better play with stuff next time I get a chance. with stuff low down on the ground i tend to just go handheld, can't be bothered inverting tripod centre etc. so stuff tends to be high/iso and a bit rushed.

3) cheers, again didn't notice these things, this is waht I need is a fresh pair of eyes on the scene.

From your original post --

2 is nice, I'd love to see the original -- not sure if I like how you've PP'ed it.

4 is absolutely money...its a great capture. Even the subtle blur of the man shooting is nice.

2 is pretty much untouched, my film man will have prob increased the black cropping upon scanning it, and thats it.

4 was the digi version, it was windy as hell where we were stood, really noisy with cloths flappingin the wind. Heres the 35mm version, its on bargain iso400 supermarket film hence the insane colour tones and the unsavoury amounts of grain. Works well though!

No.4a - This one is processed a fair bit, as it was canny underexposed

My mistake, thought 2 was a digital shot. Lovely. I like the mood that the grain lives in 4a.

yeah I shoot NC on the 35mm camera as I MOSTLY use that indoors where the colours are pretty strong anyway, the VC would make some stuff a bit garish.

Though I DO use 160VC in a 120mm camera, admitadly haven't ACTUALLY developed any yet, its only worth doing in like batchs of 5 or 10 rolls, so far I have 4 shot :s
Hopefully won't be long until I can shoot some more then dev them.

Number 4 is the dogs dangly bits in my book and any photographer , amateur or professional, would be more than happy with that.
The 2nd batch last picture I would say go slightly closer to the guage and stop down to your widest aperture and just focus on the guage and get some nice bokeh in the background.

Dude those shots are great, I wouldn't be quite so modest. I mean don't go around grabbing your proverbial wang but no need to play down your work so much.

Also you shoot film which gives you a lot more cred IMO
