Figured I'd throw a few of my shots up here...

n.b.: In the shot with the fuse, my boot is the size reference, size 13. Damn thing is about 8 lbs.

Yeah, I saw. Very lame.
Original and the 4th of july backup are both shut tight.
I've rolled through a few times last week, noticed cops chillin a lot more frequently than ever before.

Gonna have to start hittin the shadier parts of town. Dusting off the old flashlight and turnin over some rocks.

Nice shots. I've always wanted to check this place out, but i've always been way to nervous with it being right downtown, and the public safety building and courthouse a few blocks away. ADDITION- We should all put our heads together and see what we can dig up for new locations. Maybe meet up sometime. I haven't been out in over a year, an i've been getting antsy.

I joined the group, if you don't mind. I'm not horribly far off from Rockford, and I enjoy meeting new people anyway (but not in a creepy serial killer type of way, unless you enjoy that sort of thing).

I wish I had known about this building before I left NIU.

the building is in the news a few times a year about them wanting to rip it down, or some interested buyer in making it apartments. nothing ever happens.

dont get your hopes up about it getting saved in the long run though. the cement is in bad shape and crumbling on every floor. i dont know if the costs to just make the building safe would even be worth it.

i went out last week again checking over the building. still seems extremely locked up. barbor coleman is 1/2 way down. and a good 6 smaller locations around BC are also leveled.

Damn..... It's juts so sad. I understand why they chose to tear it down though. Asbestos out the ass, and i also saw something about cadmium there on the EPA's Brownfields website. Cadmium is a heavy metal, and very hazardous without Protective gear.

Can't say for sure what went on in the little room on the roof.... but from the research, it looks like this was added when Amerock built the 1950 addition (the lower part of the building that faces Cedar St.) According to an old Amerock employee, it was put on as a clubhouse for the employees by the Aldeens.

When the initial building was built (1912/1913), it had an employee rec room on the top floor with kitchen, dining room, etc.) I have never been in the building, but I don't think there are any remnants of that anymore. The earliest part of the building is the 11 story section that is on the northeast corner. The taller section that fronts Main was put on in 1919. The building has a fascinating history, and a lot of people do not know about its connection with Rockford's knitting industry.

Glad to find this group with an appreciation of cool old buildings in Rockford!

‘Friends of Ziock’ is not a science fiction movie, unfortunately

December 6th, 2010 at 05:53pm Chuck Sweeny

“Friends of Ziock.” If sounds like a science fiction movie. The trailer would say: “We are Friends of Ziock, here to unlock the Secret of Morsh. Any attempt to interfere with our Holy Ziockian Mission will be met with the overwhelming force of the Ziock Degeneration Beam.”

Unfortunately, “Friends of Ziock” isn’t playing at the AMC-16 on State Street, or even at the AMC-14 in Kenny Chesney Park. No, I’m afraid “Friends of Ziock” is a real life-form.

Friends of Ziock refers to a group of preservationists in downtown Rockford who think the building universally known as the downtown Amerock Building is really the Ziock Building. They are thwarting the city’s and the RAVE Authority’s plans to tear down the 13-story building, which has been vacant so long that parts are falling into the streets below.

The RAVE plan is to turn the building site into an outdoor amphitheater, so that Davis Park becomes a first class venue, a smaller version of Chicago’s Millennium Park. But the Friends of Ziock won’t have it. They are so desperate to stop demolition that they have threatened to reveal a secret previously known only to paleomillennialists who inhabit the Ziock Sector of Planet Zircon X*25 in the Xirriliam Galaxy. For it is only a select group of the Zircon elders who know the Secret of Morsh. I can’t reveal it to you.
But wait … I’ve just received this message from Outer Space. It seems that Sub-Commander Julian of Wiki-onions has sent me classified cables relating to the Friends of Ziock and the Secret of Morsh.

Apparently a team of observers and scientists came here early in the 20th century from Zircon X*25. Their mission was to find signs of intelligent life in what we then called the Forest City. A copy of their detailed report, heretofore known only to those Zircon elders, was supposed to have been Left Behind somewhere in Rockford’s downtown section. The cable provided the coordinates to the exact location, but ….
Darn. Sub-Commander Julian’s websites have been frozen by the RAVE Artificial Ice Ray.

All science fiction goofiness aside, the Friends of Ziock want to put the Amerock Building — I’ve NEVER heard it called the Ziock Building, and you haven’t either — on the National Register of Historic Places. To me, “historic” means tourists will come to see the building from What Cheer, Iowa, Ding Dong, Texas and Hot Coffee, Mississippi. (Look ‘em up.)

I’m not against historic designation for historic buildings. But just because the Amerock Building recalls a portion of Rockford’s rich manufacturing history, doesn’t make it historic. It has no architectural significance and is getting in the way of progress.

Save and restore the Elks Club? Certainly. The Times Theater? Yes. The Midway? Definitely. But the Amerock Building? Certainly not. The math doesn’t work. It would cost as much to remake the building into condos as it would to redo a similar factory building in Chicago’s west or south Loop. But you couldn’t charge one-quarter the rent or lease price here as you could there.
By the definition of the “friends,” Rockford has 4 million square feet worth of “historic” empty factories in Rockford.

One to beam up, Mr. Scott.
