The Misadventures of Whootsinator and UrbEx: Vol. 1

Today, along with Budda, one of his friends not on UER, and one of my friends not on UER, I conducted my first Urban Exploration Endeavor. The location was Vernon Manor, Cincinnati, OH. I'll post what I believe to be my best six photos, the others are available in my Flickr set in their full sized 'glory'. I believe critique and practice using the recommendations obtained in the critique process is the best way to get better. I am shooting with a Nikon D3000, kit 18-55mm lens.

Without further ado, here are today's pictures (or technically yesterday's, by now). Rip my ego to shreds UER, so that I can rebuild and become better.

#4 is excellent! Did you have a good time? That's really all the matters, the photographic evidence is superfluous, the exploration is what counts.

You betcha

Had a great time, can't wait to get out there again! If I can somehow get a ride all the way to Dayton, I've already been invited Draining.

I personally didn't care for #4 because it's so noisy. I didn't want to hold the group back, and I had been on that for a minute or two, so I just went on with what I had.

Shot 2 is great, leaving the vent grills included in the picture is an interesting and unexpected touch as most people I know would have probably cropped them out.

Other than potential subject matter concerns in shot 5 and 6 (which is no real issue merely a matter of personal taste) the only problem I can see is the significant overexposure in shot 5.

But I would be very pleased with shot 2 if I was you, it is a excellent shot in which to remember your first exploration.

Thanks for the comments.

If you follow the link to #5 on my Flickr, you'll see my comment. It was actually supposed to be washed out, because of what's happening to the historical building. 'Culture to Corporate', the culture and history of the building is being washed away and turned into office space.

#4 is a cool subject, but the noise is the least of its problems. The downward angle is awkward; it'd be a much better shot straight on from a lower vantage point. It also seems underexposed with a weird yellow cast to the light, though not nearly as much so as 1 and 3.

As far as #4 goes, that weird yellow light is pretty close to the actual lighting in the room. As in, that's almost the way it really looked. A straight-on angle is impossible with the lens I was using. Take a look at #3, and in the left you can see the subject of #4, and the cramped conditions restricting a straight-on shot. The noise is truly terrible, and that's one thing I believe I could have made better. The group was done in that area though, and I needed a picture, so I took what I could get without holding everyone back.

I've actually corrected the color on 1 and 3, the lighting wasn't THAT yellow. I won't reupload them though, because I don't have a Pro Flickr account and I try to conserve space.

Thanks for the critique again, everyone.

1. awkward angle
2.under exposed, probably would have shot straight on
3.i like the lighting on this but probably would have tried to shoot it from a lower angle to fit the whole subject
4.what the noise?
5 & 6 do nothing for me.
