White Rock Baths was originally opened as a male swimming pool and turkish baths in 1878, then owned and operated by the Hastings and St Leonards Public Baths & Aquarium Company Limited. In June 1911 the baths closed and reopened as the Baths Cinema, which at full capacity could seat 1,600 people on a floor constructed over the pool. In 1934 the site was rebuilt and reopened as baths and a swimming pool again, and many of the art deco features installed at this time remain. At the end of 1964 the baths and saltwater olympic-size swimming pool were decommissioned, with the pool being boarded over again to be used this time as an ice rink. It remained open in this role until 1997, when the building became too difficult to maintain, due to it being mostly below sea level. Some areas have clearly been disused since the baths section closed in the 60s, although many features in these parts of the site remain.

Yes I think the local residents are organising a protest march for this place to be renovated to its former glory.

Very cool!

I do hope they save it, but as most places these days it all depends if the money is there to do it.

Thanks for the pics statler.

Same. Seeing the swimming lanes in the B&W photo then seeing its modern day incarnation was very cool. What an amazing location.
