Please give me any kind of critiques or comments on any of these pics. I shot all of these pics on 2/6/10 with my Nikon Coolpix. I am considering a camera upgrade, if you own a rebel xsi/t1i or Nikon D5000, a review would be appreciated.

#7 in your last post seems a little too blown out. But I do have an XSI and from a quality standpoint its pretty hard to tell these where shot on a P&S. Although a DSLR with a good fast lens would be able to blur the background more like (I assume) you where trying for in several of the shots. The silo shots are pretty cool.

I feel like I am in ...well... the great plains ;) Posted by willskith Unfortunately, due to overuse of tonemapping, photography was gradually ruined and now stands with halos.

That last picture is unique and I like that it just shows the silhouettes, but where the sticks overlap with sunlight, it turned blue around the edges...

It is hard to pull off some of the shots I hope for with a P&S, but it was a good camera to learn basics on.

I was at Best Buy tonight, and looked at the xsi and t1i. I think the xsi will be the most likely. The t1i doesn't seem to have many significant upgrades except video, which is not why I am buying a DSLR.

Specifically what Coolpix are you using? Very crisp images.

It looks like in a lot of them you're trying to use the rule of thirds, but it doesn't really work right, particularly in 1 or 2. Try to be more aware of background elements that may interfere or crowd your photographic subject. Also I kind of think you're focusing on up-close things when it's the stuff in the background I really want to look at.

So for number 1, would you have liked it better if I had shot from a higher angle, so the valve would be in a similar location in the photo, but the barn would not be so close to it? I understand your comment about how you find the background more interesting than the subject I focused on, but a plain picture of that barn would not be very exciting in my opinion. Anybody else have an opinion on this?

The camera I am shooting with is a Nikon Coolpix S560. I think I bought that one right as they were coming out with the newer models because Best Buy no longer stocks it. Great P&S for $200 in my opinion.

Thanks for the tips guys!

I think I would have prefered 1 if you had moved to the right, so that the valve would have been in the bottom left third, and the barn in the top right third.

It might've been better to move a bit to the right, so the valve would be opposite from the barn. Right now it seems like the strong elements are a little too stacked on the right side.

That is a good point, I like that suggestion. That would work well since there is nothing of interest in the left corner really.
