|  | | | OK if this isn't kosher and not in the right thread or shouldn't be asking in the first place I apologize in advance, but my question is sincere. I went up to the Griffith Observatory tonight to try to shoot the full moon, but I don't think I have the right tools, camera etc, just wonder if u had any tips for night scenes. Anyway I did take a photo I thought was pretty cool and reminded me of the "rooftops" thread from a while ago. Maybe I should have posted it there, anyway I was wondering if you guys thought this photo was a good step in the right direction for me? I'm trying to hone my skills a little more before venturing out UEring in the spring.

Wolf moon tonight, brightest/fullest that it'll ever be in the year, I'm sad I don't have the right equipment to take some really nice pictures of it, as well as some of ojects lit up nicely by it tonight =(

I recognize that skyline! That kinda looks like its up near Griffith observatory or the Getty Museum.

|  | | | You need a relatively fast shutter speed to shoot the moon. Around 1/250th and f/8 or so. Those are just random numbers that I pulled out of my ass but something of that sort. The moon is reflecting sunlight so it will be extremely bright compared to everything else.
Also a focal length of 300mm or greater would be ideal.

i don't really have much to tell you about shooting the moon... but about the photo you posted... i think its really good. the one little problem is that is crooked. badly crooked. if you just straighten it out it looks MUCH better. see?

Weirdly enough, I'm not sure I prefer the non-crooked version.

well the colours and sharpness were greatly affected because i was using a resized copy saved from the internet, not the original large file. that might be affecting your view of them.

I was just up there with my tripod taking random photos, thought the photo I posted came out sort of cool, just throwing it out to the wolves  I do agree though, not too much cute about Los Angeles, but I do see the point that was trying to be made and that's fine.

-Use a small aperture, F/8-F/11 (don't go much higher or your images will be soft due to diffraction)

-Use Mirror Lock up and a self timer or shutter release to eliminate camera shake

So if you want to zoom in and capture the details of craters and such on the moon, just use an exposure you would use during the day (such as the Sunny 16 rule - google it). If you want to shoot a cityscape at night with the moon in it, it is impossible to correctly expose in a single shot for the city in darkness (like your included photo) and the moon. Vastly different exposure levels.

I've been wanting to take some moon pics myself but I don't have a long enough lens to get the detail I want. I've read tho that you shouldn't shoot it any slower than 1/30 second in order to freeze the motion. At that speed you just adjust the aperture to see what works.
