I'm going to be buying a pair of waders for draining here up in minnesota and was wondering what kind I should get? I have been looking at the hip style but there is also the chest high ones....what kind do you guys use? And which should I get? Also looking to access some sewers soon as well

Thanks again!!!

I got some rubber hip waders from Dicks Sporting Goods for around $50. After I lost one of the waders in some woods (oops), I picked up a second pair at Meijer (regional store kinda like a Wal-Mart) for around $40. They don't look as nice, but they will do the trick.

I considered chest waders, but the fact they are quite a bit heavier and much more bulky to hide while in transit to the outfall made me deceide against them.

I recently got my first drain boots, 21" (knee-high) waterproof boots, for $17 at Home Depot...one problem: they happen to be yellow. Which makes them nearly useless, as they stand out egregiously walking/biking/taking buses to drains. My take on drain footwear, which I still maintain, is to just get wet/dirty, and carry an extra pair of pants in your backpack to change when you get (almost) out of the drain so you look reasonable going topside again.

[If you can planning on driving to the drains, this doesn't matter, so being dry is probably more important to you than it is to me]

IMO, hip waders are more practical. I tried chest waders too, and never really been in waters that deep. Also, its a good idea to make sure waders are not too heavy. (The chest waders I had required a luggage to carry them around, which not only was extremely inconvenient, but an object of jokes... so i gave em away.)
Got mine from Bass Pro shops and local Canadian tire.

I've had good luck with my neoprene chest waders. Useful for outfalls in the winter when getting wet is less of an option. Also useful when you need to go through 4ft of water or so.

Be careful, not safe.

when you are here, you wish you were there. but once you're there, it soon becomes a here, and you again wish to be there instead of here...

They're all seeing yours' and others' amazing drain pictures, of course...it seems like when there's drainers, there's more drainers. (and when there's not, it seems impossible to get one started)

IMO hip waders are the way to go. All Ive got now are chest waders and while they're nice at keeping me dry, theyre tough to function normally in. They make bending over, climbing ladders and just about everything a hassle. I try and avoid wearing them whenever possible. the higher end neoprene ones are more flexible, but they're also more $$$. Unless your planning on going in very deep water, Id say your better off with hip waders.

I'm going to vote for chest waders, because you can shove everything in them like a kangaroo pouch. Keep your camera dry, keep your tripod not-as-wet. And it's extra insurance for when you take that step that's just a bit deeper than you thought it would be.

During the summer.... I'd side w/ bfinanO, but during the winter it's different.

The advice I got as a deep-water draining newb (which is to say, before this weekend) was:
1) Get the walmart waders
2) Wear them a few times
3) Return them when they start to leak. Go to step 2.
