|  | | | Ok heres the deal i live in an area that is known for the floods it has ans it a reasonable large town 52,000 people i have down a little bite of exploring here when i was in high school and it has some reasonable drains with out getting into the ones that run through the CBD (which according to the old town plans the river that floods/runs through the town used to run down (what is now the main street)
being Australia there all just storm water drains so hazard wise it fairly safe but not knowing anyone in the local area and deciding i dont want to know many people in this country city i am wondering what your opinion is about going into these drains to explore alone (and seeming as the river used to flow under the CBD main street the drains i want to explore is there going to be any unsuspecting surprises that i may want to be aware of)

| | | | Draining is always more fun with company! Apart from that, it's certainly safer with someone else there to look out for you should you need it. Most of my draining has been alone, but I certainly don't think it's a great idea.

| | | | Another alternative to bringing someone is having a contact waiting for you above ground should anything go wrong. I'm not sure if you can send calls from inside storm drains, but you could give them instructions for if you don't call within a couple hours.

| | | | I think a big thing to think about is drains vs. sewers. For both as long as it's not raining/snow melting you should be okay. I've drained solo a few times in drains I knew well. It's not that big of a deal. But of course it's always recommended to go with others if you can.
Sewers on the underhand seem to sometimes hold slightly riskier parts or unseen surprises as compared to just storm drains. I really think it's a good idea to go with at least one other person in a sewer. I have gone into a new one solo, through a risky area, but I shouldn't have done it. I don't recommend sewers solo and afterwords I kinda felt funny about what I've done.

|  | | | what other people have said as far as letting people know where you are going. Just let someone know when and where you're going in and what time you should be back. with my experience, there is no cell coverage in drains. sometimes you get some in skylight rooms and pillboxes, but it's very rare.
In my opinion it's a lot more fun with more people (as well as safer).

| | | | Another thing about draining alone, I usually start downstream at the outfall and make my way upstream. That way if I needed to exit, I know for sure I can get out if I continue downstream. This is especially helpful if the drain has changes of elevation, pools, waterfalls etc.

I find when I go draining alone, I can go as far as I want, and I'm the only one I'm putting at risk, so my mind is more at ease.

Some of my favorite people to go draining with I never thought would be interested until I randomly asked them one day.

Yep, I can fully agree with that too. My current draining buddy is a friend from uni, to whom I just happened to mention what I did in a tute one day. Got the usual "Seriously?" look and explained myself a bit. About a month later again I happened to mention something related to draining, and five minutes later we were organising an expo, which strangely enough turned out to be the best I'd had.
So ASK above all - although you'll undoubtedly get a couple of people who'll go on one expo with you and won't come back once the novelty has worn off, ASK some more and you'll find dedicated people who make exploring truly enjoyable.

I am Currently residing in Tamworth nowadays there are two sides of town here separated by the Peel River which all of the storm water drains empty in to (my basic plan would be to enter at one of the outlets and work my way up (i have been into a few before this way for a reasonable distance a lot of them open up when going through a park or open section ( i have also found a few entrances that are sealed off a few meters in by metal bars these are the ones that seem to run under the CBD) there are also flood gates that they can close off at the river out lets for when it floods to prevent flood water from filling them up and flooding the streets
The ones under the CBD are the ones i would like to explore as well as the ones that branch out off a few of the others i have been in (there are a few outlets along the river and i know a few of them branch off as you head up them)
I would plan on making sure i let my partner know the general direction i plan to head and where i enter from before i go (as a safety measure)
Thank you all for your reply's on this (i plan on taking some photos of the entrances at the river so i shall post what i find)
I am just sort of a bit cautious on the whole rain situation as the climate here is known to have rain come on fairly fast on a lot of afternoons (Stinking hot all day then can just suddenly build up with clouds and pour down for a short while then go again)

| | | | Walking back from an appointment today with my partner (got a few photos) when i took first photo of the open section up towards the start of the drain system and i managed to get a pic of the one of the ones i want to explore and thanks to the council doing some mowing recently (for the festival) i found another entrance right beside it which i had over looked and not seen (so one bonus there)
Due to not being to prepared and it being raining by the time i got back down the hill i did not get to get pics of the other entrances i want to explore and only had my mobile to take pics (so please forgive the poor photos i will get more with the camera over the weekend (weather permitting)
Once again the rain came on quick and heavy in the after noon a little bit of hail today even *the photos of the open canal at the top of the hill where it starts were taken just as it started to spit and the ones at the bottom are about a 15 min walk down the hill later but taken about an hour after
