| | Where the Green Moss Grows < on 1/18/2010 3:01 AM >
| | | Visited an old high school today and tried to focus more on taking GOOD pictures instead of just pictures. Let me know what you think and where I can improve. Shot on a Kodak Easyshare CD1013 Point and shoot. 1) I really liked this one, even though the windows are all blown out.
2) This ones ok, IMO. I was trying to work on getting different perspectives and making an interesting foreground.
3) This was taken in the gym, where there was a green carpet of furns growing, even in January.
4) Also taken in the gym, I think the climbing rope messed this one up.
5) Bleachers in the gym, not much to say.
6) I really liked the way the moss was growing up the wall here.
7) Took this shot mostly for the reflection under the chair. [last edit 1/18/2010 5:03 AM by Trap - edited 1 times]

| | | I agree on the window blowout (and on the bricks in #2) but it looks like you have a good eye for detail. I also agree with MSG, the gym photos are fantastic. #4 has nice colours, #5 I like the angle and the decay. Not bad for a point and shoot, not bad at all.

| | | Suggestions: - Watch your vertical lines. Try to make them vertical if possible. - They seem a little soft. Maybe throw a little unsharp mask on them in pshop (if you have it) and see if that helps. - Read about Rule of Thirds and see if you can apply that in your shots. It is a good thing to try new perspectives, photo heights, angles.. etc. Kudos for doing so.

Yes, that is by far the most rickety old trampoline I've ever seen.

Vertical lines are something I have trouble with, mostly because of perspective I think. When straightening a photo in PS what lines should I focus on making straight and which should I let go to perspective? Floors should probably be straight, but which walls, columns, wires, etc? Is there a way to correct the softness in camera or is that just a limitation of my gear? Also, unsharp mask? Seems couter intuitive, but I'll give it a shot. These are all unedited, BTW so any other PS/GIMP tips to make them look better is much apprecited. If anyone wants to use one to demonstrate what they mean, by all means feel free to save the pictures. And ROT, got it. Thanks a lot for the tips and for the complements.

This isn't a particularly good shot but it shows how overgrown the gym floor has become:

it's actually not a hole, the floor there is really cool because as the slats of wood that the gym floor was made of expanded they warped up and there were these big bulges in the floor that looked like gopher tunnels, that 'hole' is where part of the tunnel has collapsed and you can see down the tube. | | | I actually got a close-up of that "hole" at the exact moment Shutchatrap was taking that photo. I was just out of frame.
I wouldn't step there either. The wood dome is too beautiful to step on. ;) EDIT: Beat me to it! [last edit 1/18/2010 10:09 PM by WarBird69 - edited 1 times]

damn, I kinda thought so too, but that was the default setting on the mask... need to tone it back some I guess... but aside from my inability to edit, how can I improve with the camera? I'll work on improving in Photoshop later

Keeping your lens clean (in cold weather, breathing near lenses can sometimes cause condensation to form on them) can go a long way toward keeping your photos sharp. Shooting on a tripod with the timer function on and ensuring your camera is stable can all also help avoid the fuzzy effect. I'd also look at using the distortion correction tool in PS on some of your photos- the gym especially seems to have barrel distortion. Most of your shots also seem pretty midtone heavy and a bit underexposed- try adjusting your levels in PS a touch. Love the bleachers shot. Here's your gym shot corrected for distortion, vertical and horizontal shift (what Yokes said) and contrast heightened a bit using levels. No UM used.
Get down, girl, go 'head, get down. |

LMAO! After looking at Hydro's corrections, I can see why you didn't want to test the trampoline: half the springs are unhooked!
