Steam Tunnels

To start things off, I've been interested in the steam tunnels under universities ever since my dad told me about his escapades in them in his college days. That was back when I was around 12. Now that I've gotten into UE and am a reasonably experienced explorer, I got the idea to try out the ones under our local university. I did some research, confirmed that there were indeed steam tunnels, and then went to scout out entrances with a friend.

we only found one usable entrance, and it looks like it could be pretty sketchy. it's reasonably exposed, and it's a large two-way iron trap door with no ladder into the room below. We're trying to figure out a way to get in and not get trapped inside.(I'm not sure we could lift the door back up again after it's closed). any tips?
(quick drawing below to illustrate)

(green = handles on door)
(blue = liftable trapdoors)
(yellow = main steam pipe)

Last, what kind of trouble will I be in if I get caught? I'm not planning on tagging or cutting any locks, but I'm still trying to weigh it all out.

One idea: Make a way to exit and send a scout with a walkie talkie, then scout

The college's web page should describe terrible penalties if caught. It's likely not good.

It's also likely not bad. At my college it's a $25 fine (because everything is now) and a slap on the wrist for getting into roofs/tunnels.

You will probably have dozens of exits to choose from, at least one into every building on campus served by steam heating. They are all locked from the outside, but should open from the inside. These also work well for turning in homework after hours.

Have you looked for tunnel access through basements or crawlspaces? There were some sections of my university's steam tunnel network that I was only able to access from connected buildings.

At my school it's grounds for expulsion, and you have to state your case to a disciplinary review board if you want to stay in.

So definitely make sure you know what the rules are. I haven't attempted my schools tunnels for that reason, with the exception of my freshmen year before I knew what the consequences were. Not worth the risk to me, I'd rather get arrested than have the thousands of dollars I've spent on school go to waste.

well, I'm not a student, so I don't have to worry about being expelled. That also means I have little to no access to the interior of any buildings.
I went back last night to check it out again, and it looks like about a 20 foot drop to the bottom. I think I'm going to tie an anchor to a large tree nearby and rappel down, and then just leave it open. maybe throw some cardboard over the open trapdoor to make it less conspicuous.
Here's some photos I got. Think I could use that metal beam for support on the way down?

I'd use etriers (or a knotted rope), 20' isn't really worth the rappel. It'd be less obvious if you tied into the grate, and if it holds up to college kids jumping on it, it'll hold up to you hanging on it.

yup.

yeah. by rappel I meant taking a braided rope I got from hope depot. Tying it onto the grate is a good idea though!

If you're into this kind of stuff, buy some cones, a reflector vest and hard hat, and rent a white pickup from a car rental place. Then just head down. You look official enough that a cop or passerby won't second guess.

First two are from street level.

This is beneath the second picture, looking up toward the street.
The hatches were chained down.

I went in through a boiler room at one end of the tunnel.

Bah, work on your social engineering. Synch your walk (but from a different direction) so you're showing up at a door when a student does and they use their keyfob to get in. Or if it's a pushbutton code try the year the school was founded or look for more-smudged numbers. Figure out what sign-in hours are (for dorms etc, after 10pm for example) and if they need ID or not. Go in with a bunch of drunks. Odds are good the "door monitor" is a work-study student themselves for less secure buildings. Try the art/music building for late night access especially if a show is going on. Etc.

I used to live near a large university of which I wasn't a student. I never had trouble getting into buildings, even after hours. My rule is to walk around a building, trying every door (even basement doors). I'd find an unlocked (or propped open) door about 80% of the time. I've found a few doors that were locked, but would still open if yanked hard enough. Doors in very old buildings will sometimes open if you pull back on the bolt with a pocketknife blade (possible B&E I know, but sometimes it's the only way).

I'm leaving my university's steam tunnels until senior year figuring "seniors can get away with anything..."

But I'm doing/have done most of the roofs on campus now figuring I'm not going to get caught unless I'm spotted and I err don't get spotted.

The best time to infiltrate anything at a college is a few hours before the sun rises on a Friday morning ...

Thirsty Thursdays will leave most students hung over and campus popo will be done making their "drunk runs" well before 3am.

You also have the advantage of having most of the students on campus so if you are spotted and get away there are literally thousands of other kids it could be.

A large portion of students go home Friday night and come back Sunday afternoon which leaves less people on campus on weekends but you have to factor there is less of a crowd to blend into and bored(er) security. Why I like early Friday morning for my serious college mischief.

Find out when the last class is because generally janitorial staff are out and about an hour before, this is also an EXCELLENT time to infil off limits parts of buildings (sometimes unlocking every room and hallway needing to be cleaned at the start of their shift!)

You can also use a janitor to your advantage ... Spill an entire 2 liter of soda (or better Hawaiian punch) on the floor so it flows under a door you need unlocked. Hopefully they will unlock it for you and may need to get "more supplies" to clean up the bigger mess on the other side; keep an eye out and slip in if possible.

Don't feel too bad if it's a state university starting pay for janitors is like 11 bucks an hour.

Wow...yeah..see we don't have anything like that around here...Other than universities, where are some more common places to find entrances?

University steam tunnels connect all the university's buildings. Look for many buildings all on the same site, like hospitals, for example. Hospitals and high schools have steam tunnels. Find an unlocked boiler room and wander around in it, that's how we found the one I spoke of earlier in this thread.

Roofs are a cool counterpart to steam tunnels, and there are usually less strict rules about them. You'd be surprised how many elevator codes to get to the top floor/roof access are just "1234*" or some variation of that.
