| | Tacoma Underground?! < on 1/14/2010 12:15 AM >
| | | I've been reading a lot online about old tunnels all throughout Tacoma. As well as a possible entrance at the basement of the Hotel Olympus, does anyone have anymore info on this? Id love to get down there!

| | | Interesting... the steam tunnel idea sounds the most plausible, those can vary in size quite a bit. If you look around the library or city archives for anything on "District heating" or central steam plants or whatnot, that's a good place to start. Another thing I'd suggest is renting or buying a kayak and following the whole waterfront, underneath the docks and piers if possible. Any old tunnels would likely come out at the water, plus there's always drains and sewers to find. Plus the underside of docks are usually pretty interesting, especially any with buildings built out over them.

| | | Lots of cities (usually ones bigger than tacoma) have steam tunnels, this sounds like urban legends getting mixed up with infrastructure. If they are abandoned they may be worth exploring, if they are active, no thanks!

| | | well you can get access to the maintance shafts and underbellies of some of the bigger buildings. My mom used to run a photography studio on south ninth across from the bank of america at the bottom of the hill which had a steel plate that you could lift up and go exploring under all the maintance stuff, and i used to work for a janitor company that cleaned most of the older structures.
