Red and Blue Flashing Lights

No, not what you think. Hehehe...

First of all, please forgive me if this has been discussed already. I've been reading about alarms on here and searching Google for the past 15 minutes with absolutely no luck.

What would a small elevated electrical box with red and blue lights flashing on it indicate? It is about the size of a speed/red light camera if anyone is familiar with those. Details: I was exploring the grounds of an empty mansion tonight when I saw it located in what would be considered the back yard. The house isn't abandoned but it has remained empty and unkempt for several months now. I asked my friend and he said there is a small electrical station by his house (not a power generating station) and there is one of these boxes over it with a security camera attached. I did not stop to study the one that I saw at the mansion to see if there was a camera on it or not.

Any idea what this is? I also e-mailed the local electric company as Joe Concerned Citizen hoping they would tell me. I could go take a picture of it tomorrow if that would help...

Just a stab in the dark but could it have been a CCTV receiver? Wired or wireless.

Were the lights currently lighting while you were there?

Doesn't look like it, no. Thank you very much for trying to help though! I appreciate it!

This would be a lot larger. We're talking like at least 10x10x10" roughly, and the strobe lights are slightly smaller than something you'd see on like a forklift or construction vehicle. Similar to this I guess (first picture I found): http://www.wolo-mfg.com/3300-big.jpg

I will go take a picture tomorrow when it's light out.

Yes, that's why I was concerned. There wasn't a single light on on the entire property other than those two. I asked if the lights are always flashing on the one by my friend's house and he says he can't remember, but he's definitely seen them flashing. I'm not sure if they were on before I entered the property or not though.

These are typical for a) home alarms and b) power stations.

The former is a beacon to alert authorities to the house that is giving off the alarm while the second is usually a visual warning for a power outage/overload/malfunction. These are often accompanied with a sign that tells you to phone a given telephone # if the light is flashing.

For a home system, it would be most likely be mounted to the house though, not out in the backyard and it would most CERTAINLY be facing a street not a closed off yard.

We have a few of those red strobes mounted on hydro panels in the downtown area.

This doesn't help you out though as it could be either of the two scenarios.

Thank you for responding!

I don't think it was attached to the house itself but then again I bolted when I saw it because I had a lot of ground to cover before reaching my entry point so I may have been mistaken about that. I know the property fairly well and I confirmed with Google Earth that it is definitely in the back of the house. There is no chance of anybody seeing it unless they have already gained access and are in the back of the property.

As for the other scenario, I suppose it could possibly be related to the mansion's power supply due to the large amount of juice the place normally soaks up. Could the lights be flashing maybe because the power to the mansion has been shut off, and this device thinks there is a problem?

In the Netherlands we have boxes not unlike the ones you describe, except that they are usually on the ground, near the property borders (but not necessarily anywhere visible from or close to a public road). They have a red light on top, which, if on, means there is something wrong with the sewer.

Also, the same boxes (the size you describe) exist for cable (tv/internet) systems, they are spaced every 3 or 4 houses apart, but also have a larger one with some control lights on the end of the road.

Maybe can you post a picture? Is it in or on the house, or separate from it? Is there a lot of cabling coming from it? What size, colour, texture? Where does the cables lead?

If it's on the house itself and no visible cabling is coming from it, it means it is powered from the house and probably doesn't have anything to do with utilities, in which case something alarm-like sounds very likely. However, not being visible from from the frontage is a bit weird.

If it has cables only from the outside (hard to check if it's mounted flush to the wall) my first guess would be: Utilities.

But if the house has been abandoned for weeks and the lights are already flashing, someone is clearly not watching it, unless it's the standby flash. Home alarms usually only check the house itself, not the land around it except for with cameras and IR detectors. If you're really curious, I would go to the box and see if you can see any stickers on it of an installation company, that might be a giveaway what it's function is...

Tijmen

P.S. google images gave me those boxes:

Road-side radar for vehicle counting

This is an electrical box. Imagine this half the size, then with a red light on top and you have the sewer box I talk of.

It might be for a pumped drain field that is attached to a septic tank. I've installed a control module like that before, minus the blue light.

It sounds like it belongs to a lift station for the sewer. One light probably signals high water and the other some kind of equipment failure.
