My first Ultra Wide shots

I just grabbed the Olympus 7-14 (14-28 35mm}.
Clearly I need to spend more time getting to know this lens.

Let me know what you think and maybe offer some advice for using such a wide lens effectively. Thanks

An ultrawide will change your life and you'll wonder how you ever shot without one.

There are really good. Be sure to watch for distortion (I think there's some in #6 and maybe in #3).

What are you supposed to do about any distortion that you may encounter? I think the shots look great myself but I could see where distortion could become a problem.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert

You can do some correction for it in Photoshop (filter, distort, lens correction). And there's software designed explicitly for distortion correction, PTLens for example (which a friend pointed me to but which I haven't used much yet).

Or you can simply live with it or celebrate it as part of what you were trying to achieve with the photo.

6 was kinda bothering me so I redid it.
I think I have to get used to cropping more than I am use to.

If you find the extremely distorted edges bad and think you're going to crop a lot I'd highly recommend you consider trying out the 9-18mm for your Olympus. I've had one over a year and it's amazing. It's only fault is there's some barrel distortion but it's only at the extreme edge of the photo and easily solved by changing composition. It's also one third the weight & price of the 7-14mm.

Nice shots and I'm a fan of the more distorted look.

I think the benefit of the wide-angle is that it puts you in the picture.

Just shooting a scene to get more image doesn't really do it.

I think the cropped hook shot is great and maybe if you had shot closer to the chair and it took more space in the foreground of the pic it could have been stronger...

Overall, sweet pics

BTW-weren't those little cubby doors green??

Photoshop has a decent distortion correction tool but honestly- it'll never really allow a piece to be printable at a large size and you can only correct so much.

Key for shooting architecture on a wide lens? Take a LOT of time setting up your compositions. Get your lines straight. Take the extra couple of seconds to bring your tripod up higher so you aren't tipping your camera up instead. Get a dual or triple way bubble level (not perfect if shooting slightly crooked collapsing architecture, but cheaper than an architectural focusing screen and good to learn from.) Use Photoshop to get rid of your barrel distortion, and try to nail your horizontal and vertical lines in-camera so you don't have to play with those silly tools.

Or invest in a tilt-shift lens and bask in its expensive glory.

Get down, girl, go 'head, get down.

i disagree.

a grid focus screen is a MUCH better investment.

you can see the grid while composing which is a million times easier. and just because your camera is level doesn't mean that your photo is, abandoned places specifically are crooking and warped all the time.

Dear Jeff!,

I said its failures included when shooting collapsing architecture, and suggested a bubble level was a first step toward a focusing screen, and it's certainly better than nothing and already helps develop an eye towards architectural accuracy.

Don't you have mats to go back to destroying?
