First explore with new camera
< on 1/1/2010 12:15 AM >

So I upgraded from a 400D to a 7D. I decided to make my first explore a place that I was familiar with so I could relax a bit more and take my time learning the ropes of the new camera. These are from Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Northern CA.

So far, I love the camera. One feature that is helping a TON is the built-in electronic level, my interior shots with the 10-22mm are now almost perfectly aligned right out of the camera. It seems more accurate than the bubble-level I used to use.

And finally, I tried out shooting video. I edited 3 short clips together, like a video triptych. You may need Quicktime to play this:

That video clip really shows off the chops of the new camera. I think it was a very worthwhile purchase. We should do a M.I. shoot soon - I'd love to see it in action. Plus, I think there are a few buildings on M.I. that you haven't been in, which you might find compelling.

CRAP! I had myself convinced to just upgrade to a 50D since they have come down so far in price with the release of the 7D. But this video just twisted me all up again ... Thanks for costing me another $800!!

This is not an alter?

Beautiful shots! Nice tonal range as well, I thought some of them were HDR with the amount of detail in them! Also, I love the right to left pan in the video, makes the hook belts look like they are moving: Very creepy!

Edited for praise

it's supposed to be a little joke/reference to Magritte's Painting "Ceci n'est pas une pipe." It should be "this is not a workshop"

Good eye, I think those are all HDR.

Only 5-7 had that HDR feel to them, the rest were natural looking. A tad light in the shadows, but that could have just been a simple +1 stop on the exposure.

Watched the video again, panning through the hooks is still creepy.

Number five is pretty great, you handled the comp well.

The video from your SLR was definitely cool, manual focus ftw. (Maybe loosen the set-screw on your tripod to make things smoother for panning) Obviously the editing was of no importance but the transitions were a bit long. but that doesn't matter. I am just a film nut.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, my current tripod head is totally inadequate for the 7D. It's a ball head with no panning ability, I panned by loosening the ball slightly. It's designed to hold a much lighter camera. I bought new tripod legs fort the 7D, now I need a head to match.

I shot some more video yesterday and it was difficult to get anything close to a smooth pan.

The sad part is that I sold a Bogen video tripod years ago, it wasn't the best, but it did have decent panning.
