| | | | My personal favorites of 2009 < on 12/27/2009 8:05 PM >
| | | I've only been taking pictures for about 2 years and have only gotten really serious about it within the last 6 months. I've met so many people in my travels and have drawn inspiration and knowledge from many of them. You've all had a hand in me developing my talent (or lack thereof) over the year and I want to thank you for that. These are the pictures I go back to most when I look over what I've done this year. Please let me know what you honestly think. 1

If I was really created in God’s image then when God was a boy he wanted to grow up to be a man, a good man, and when God was a man, a good man, he started telling the truth in order to get honest responses. |

| | | I think you have a mass of talent that helps define what urban exploring is all about. I doubt any explorer could look at that photo set and not be touched at some point or fondly reminded of an experience they've had. Number 10 is my favorite EDIT: for too many reasons to explain :p [last edit 12/27/2009 8:31 PM by Yield - edited 1 times]

| | | OK, I'll offer some criticism. Just some general thoughts on your stuff in general, not necessarily the photos in this thread... I think that your photos are outstanding in terms of technical execution - the colors, the exposures, the focus are always spot on, without exception, which is nice to see when (let's be honest) a lot of tossoff garbage gets posted on these forums. However, to me the photos often lack passion, and aren't compelling to look at for more than a few seconds. It's hard to pinpoint it without having more knowledge of composition than I do, and maybe it's just a personal, subjective opinion that doesn't hold water... but to me your technical ability outshines your artistic voice. That said, there are definitely exceptions here to what I'm saying. 1, 4, 7, and 14 are all great, striking shots. 2 and 6 suffer from being crooked, and 6 is also just a boring shot. That's a very photogenic building with much more interesting scenes to photograph. 5 seems awkward somehow, maybe too much ceiling in view, or the doors being cropped off. The obvious problem with 10 is those branches sticking into the shot on the left, otherwise that one is really nice. 11 is some impressive light painting, but the way the chair is cut off ruins it for me. Hope that helps. I do always look forward to seeing your stuff.

I'll keep that in mind when shooting, maybe it's because all of them where shot on the same lens and the same feeling carry's through?
That said, there are definitely exceptions here to what I'm saying. 1, 4, 7, and 14 are all great, striking shots. |
Those are my favorites too.
2 and 6 suffer from being crooked, and 6 is also just a boring shot. That's a very photogenic building with much more interesting scenes to photograph. |
I don't see how 2 is crooked and 6 was shot low so the lines aren't straight. I should have cropped it a bit tighter though to take the wall on the left side out. What building are you talking about? Boro or Norwich? My 2nd favorite shot from Boro is this one
5 seems awkward somehow, maybe too much ceiling in view, or the doors being cropped off. |
Limitation of my lens and room dimensions, but I loved the contrasting symmetry of the rooms. I also shot it high because I liked the light fixture. I've seen a few other people with this shot though so I think it may becoming kinda generic.
The obvious problem with 10 is those branches sticking into the shot on the left, otherwise that one is really nice. |
It's funny everyone likes this one, I do to, but when I look at it I always wished I spent more time framing it so the reflection was not cut off. As for the branches, best I can do is clone them out, there was no shooting around them.
11 is some impressive light painting, but the way the chair is cut off ruins it for me. |
That's all natural light, without doing a much larger pano there was no way to get the chair in. The subject of the photo isn't the chair though.
Hope that helps. I do always look forward to seeing your stuff.

I appreciate you taking the time to look and offer some criticism.
