Merciless HDR Critique Sought

As a gimmick I ain't down w/ the HDR thing, but these are from my first attempt for it's utilitarian value in pulling detail out where normal exposure can't handle the latitude. I tried to be subtle and I know I'm not there yet but what do you think.

Not quite abandoned just vacant for the winter:
1

2

3

4

5

6

7

I can already see that feeding these thru Photobucket made 'em look quite garish. 1 and 3 in particular don't appear nearly as saturated in Bridge.

Do you have a non-HDR image? Just from these I'm not quite seeing the need/use for HDR...

Ya this is all stuff you could do with recovery and fill light in lightroom.
I'm wondering if your source was RAW and if it was a single exposure or multiple?

I would have to agree with RoF, these pictures don't seem to have the need for HDR. A little fine tuning with settings (ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc...) would give these pictures more detail than HDR. It's good to see someone taking the leap to high-dynamic range, though. Keep experimenting, you'll get it eventually.

If you want my honest critique on the pictures, here ya go - all but 3 seem overexposed and grainy, and the subject in 6 is a little hard on the eyes. Just keep on shooting, you will get better with time.

If I was going to do something with HDR or more preferably exposure blending; I'd fix those damn blown out windows.

If these are HDR, I would've focused more on rescuing detail in the blown out windows. Then again, that's probably a better job for bracketing and blending.

This place is 5 min from my house and I thought it would have the potential to experiment with hdr for when it might be more beneficial. These are all from multiple raw exposures. No success with redeeming any detail outside the windows--didn't even include those (up to 6 exposures attempted). Without uploading the range, I can say they have more detail in one image than possible as single exposure w/ fill adjust but do you think they look too tweaked? being that I just did them and they represent a 1st attempt I ain't being too objective.

yeah, my hopes exactly. don't know if it was the snow casting too much light or my ineptitude.

You underexpose ... high aperture, low ISO, fast shutter speed.

err what kind of camera do you use?
EOS 10D? (pulled from a previous image's meta data)

Your camera should be able to handle that ... I was gonna say a P'nS might not be able to.

This is in that first shot, can't get it w/o losing the interior. Asking too much?

Is this a case where bracket and blend (never tried it) is better?

You could simply put in in photoshop, overlay and then manually cut around the edges and insert it into the other image. A lot of times I do that (esp. something nice and square like a window ) because it's easier than fighting with programs.

Tried that, looked like crap, my ineptitude again, I'm sure it can be done well,
and probably easier in this case. But in general is it even possible to hdr or b&b that kind of latitude?

Yeah, perfect time to give bracketing and blending a try. There's a tutorial on it pinned in the photo forum.

Thanks for that and all for input.

Funny, it's 3 that bugs my eyes.

two minutes of tweaking...

Photomatrix + exposure blending those two shots provided.

edit: I dropped you color saturation which is why mine is darker than the original.

That's closer to what I was looking for though it lost a bit in the shadows.
I imagine that can be worked with. Thanks for tweaking VV.

Anyone know of a free source for Photomatix that doesn't come w/ a watermark?

Yea, you're gonna need to go back and try to understand what the purpose of HDR is before trying it. These shots don't look like HDR, didn't need HDR to look like they do, etc. The windows were blown! What's the point of HDR for a shot like that?

That is precisely my point. Combining up to 5 images and I still cant get outside the window. Was wondering if I was asking too much or just need to keep working w/ it. I'm going to give B&B or photomatix a try.
