Not always - I know of locations that if you went in a certain way once that you'll never get in that way again.

Pretty much what she said. But yes, if you see a door, try it, it may be unlocked, I've had this happen a number of times. Broken window, a loose board, or just a HUGE hole in the wall.
|
Agreed. Try the doors, its surprising how many are left open - circle the building (there may be an obvious gap on the other side) - also try sliding windows open

| | | I've been to about 125 places. Not all of them were buildings (think a bridge one can walk on without crossing a fence), but of all the "buildings" I've been in, there has been 1 where I've performed B&E: I pulled out a board which was nailed over a doorframe. After we left that place, we found a hammer and nailed the board back. All other buildings I've been into were either missing or open doors (or entire walls) or more ninja-ish techniques, including climbing trough basements vent openings or holes (literally) dug by rabbits under foundation walls. The best example of this is a buiding which had very recently been boarded up, and quite good as well. However, the 3 of us found 3 separate entries, and created a fourth on the way out. All that was needed for this were some crates to climb on the roof (that allready were in place) and a screw we put in the doorlock so it wouldn't close anymore. We met other explorers once inside who had found another POE. However, there's also plenty of buildings where I've found NO point of entry. If you want to learn more about urbex in general, there are 3 good ways: 1. try it yourself 2. find a local explorer to take you with him 3. buy Ninjalicious' book. (titled: Access All Areas - my copy is in storage so I don't know whether it contains a chapter on entry points) Tijmen

| | | Another thing. It hasn't been explicitly said in this thread yet, but explorers do have (a few) ethics. The most famous one is "take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footsteps", but right behind that comes an unwritten one that I can summarize as "Entrances: don't ask, don't tell". It is not bon ton to post your method of entry into a place, for 2 reasons:
- It might attract "unwanted" people (taggers, vandals)
- For a lot of explorers, finding the way in is half the fun*.
The third reason is that if you meet an explorer who has been to the same place as you have, the one with the easy way of entry can have a laugh at the hilariously complicated way the other explorer has found*. This is a very common pastime among explorers. Also, people who publicly ask for entrance details, are usually found "less worthy". On this forum, it won't get you any respect. However, it might be perfectly OK to ask a fellow explorer (who trusts you) for entrance details if he has been to said location - by private message. Tijmen * There's a location where we spent half an hour finding a way in. Once we were in, we decided the location wasn't worth it, and bailed within 2 minutes. ** Real example: walking down a lovely albeit a little steep trail versus being chased by a dog while hopping fences of gardens next to inhabited houses.

| | | i usually just wish my way in. 98% of the time this works. the hard part is the other 2%, in which, i am required to run through walls. this takes practice.

| | | I've spent nearly forty-five minutes crawling through a back-breaking service tunnel with my mates only to find the front door was lock-picked, despite it not budging the day before.
also try sliding windows open |
Most older buildings have wooden, double hung windows and are easy to slide open and prop up with your tripod or maglite. Although many ground floors are outfitted with storm windows, or plywood, they can often come off easily, too. Just don't break 'em, and if you remove it, put it back. Just as I was about to give up on a place, I found a ladder from the nearby barn and used it to get to the open attic window and put it back when I left. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst!

| | | There are places that require teamwork to get into. I've climbed onto things that without a rope or a partner getting back down would have been extremely tricky. Think of walking out on along a narrow ledge (with a fatal or at minimum leg breaking fall below you) and then having to reach up where you can barely reach the roof above you to pull yourself up and then think of trying to go back down that way...

| | | Well everyone has basically answered your question, but allow me to offer another option. If you need in somewhere just get one of these. I picked myself up one last year and they're great. Pull down walls, drive through walls, blow holes through walls...it's up to you! (Parking is a bit of an issue though.)

| | | Posted by Boffo Have you ever tried? Because 9/10 times this is how I get inside a building.
|
Pretty much exactly. I've had to do some insane climbing and crap aswell (as higher up is always less secure). But mostly what boffo said.
At least that's what i tell people so they don't find out that I buy grenades from Corley.

Posted by Intrinsic Why is this? My thoughts are that for every sealed up building that looks to be Fort Knox, there are also bored mischevious little kiddies with lots of time on their hands. |
Lucky for you I was born there just so this little kiddie could leave a door unlocked for you ;)

| | | As stated before, you'll pretty much always find an open door, window, or a hole in a wall. The few times you don't find such an entrance, it never hurts anyone to give a board a little tug. Often you can just pull off the bottom of a boarded window and climb through.
