Photo from the kollector...

Hey all,

Thinking of putting this pic in a photo comp, let me know what you think.

It is a sewer / stormwater system under construction in Paris, you may recognize it as the one dsankt pimped on various forums recently.

I'm brutally honest on this forum so I expect the same in return.

Great shot mate, and rest assured I don't say that lightly.

Only thing I could offer is that the lights in the distance seem a bit bright (on my un-calibrated monitor), have you tried dodging them out a bit?

I think dodging is your best bet for those lights. I like that the person (or you) in the photo creates the scale for the tunnel. Maybe even a very small amount of fill light (if you have the RAW file). Great composition though, and can I ask what the contest is for or what the requirements are?

Pretty! Not a fan of the signature though.

Cool, I kinda liked the lights a bit overexposed, dodging them out just makes the pic look a bit flat.

The comp is the petzl Tikka comp, I entered the photo, the chances of me winning are nil. I'm up against a shot of two guys on top of Mt Everest. But you can go and vote for me all the same if you want, five stars would be nice.

Damn, you don't like the sig... well it does look better on normal color shots, the sepia and white looks a bit weird. Sucks because I've just run a script to replace the sig on 350 pics for a web site rewrite I'm planning. Fark.

Here is a sig on a normal color pic:

Cheers all.

Yeah, definitely lose the sig. It kind of screams "I just discovered these cool effects in this program called Paintshop."

Photoshop...

So is it the font that sucks or the embosed effect?

Pretty much both. I'd just stick to a simpler, smaller font and drop the effects.

I'm not gonna lie, I completely agree with oryx/micro on the watermark. It looks like a pre-teen found the text-rendering plugins and can't wait to show his cool warez buddies his sick-fx; though at least you made it easily readable on a dark or light background, something too oft missing from watermarks.. I think with a less "comic sans" font it would look fine. Or, if you wanna get all fancy, sign your name a bunch of times on a piece of paper, scan it, and make that your watermark. I think that ends up looking the most professional.

Oh, and you can use the imagemagick/GD image manipulation library that's included with the majority of PHP builds (assuming you are using php...) to overlay the watermark at image load time. That way you can change it easily and not have to keep duplicating files with different watermarks. This has the downside of being run every time someone views an image, but with a simple cacher it would seriously save you some hassle. Sorry, I'm a web development nerd; if you want any more info on that feel free to PM me though haha.

As for the photo, amazing. Seriously, I love it! The small pipe & human are great for perspective, and I *love* the striping reflections in the moist concrete seams. My only comment would be try toning down the lights, but as you said you did try it and made an artistic choice. Without a doubt one of my favorite tunnel pictures ever! Good luck with the contest, how great would it be to win your weight in gear hahaha.

Ah, the truth hurts...

So it's been changed, the photo is more a 'photo with a signature' rather than 'a signature on a photo background'.

RustIsRadical is right about the signature being visable on both dark and light pics, and that is the reason I picked the embosed effect. That is kind of important when you're using a script to apply the sig to hundreds of photos.

So I kept the embosse but I've chosen a more subtle font, increased the transparancy of the sig and made it smaller.

The new site is run by PHP and I did think about having PHP apply the watermark but I was hoping to keep the site easy on the server. That's not all that important now, I guess, I just like the ease of being able to flick photos out to the net or email without having to apply a watermark on a case by case basis.

Thanks for the comments, it's nice to know the system works

It is an awesome shot. I'd recommend losing the water mark and cropping in a little from the top though.

Just out of curiosity, do you have the shot in color?

I'm on the band wagon with the whole signature thing. I'm interested to see how the picture looks with your new watermark.
I do find the picture itself interesting with good contrast, and amazing depth.

For what little it's worth, I agree with most of the other comments here. Your "old" signature noticeably detracted from the strength of the image. Other than that, the photo is incredible. Everything from composition to subject matter to the dramatic lighting work together to yield a very beautiful and powerful photograph.
