I used to carry maglites but I found they have a tendency to drink the batteries dry relatively quickly. I use the AA Mini mags at work and I find them rather substandard after being on for about 30 mins. - 1 hour. I also find the throw on the mini mags to be rather pathetic for exploring purposes.

The LED conversion kits are amazing for the minimags/maglites.

I say go for it (it'd be fun). But if you can't see 5' w/ a flashlight, you won't be able to see further with NVG's... You could try a laser pointer, I've used a 20mw green, and it's nice because it can discretely illuminate things at a distance.

@logtec, these stupid gimmicky gadgets (toys) are fun. We can live without them, and often do, but isn't exploring supposed to be fun? What's wrong with having fun while having fun?

you know, all toys aside, there are some locations that you cannot afford to have any light shine out of a stray window or doorway. this would potentially alert many to your presence.

NVGs allow for discreet and effective explorations. im not saying a custom or good set should REPLACE a handy flashlight, im saying that they should be carried (if NEEDED) in ADDITION to a flashlight.

People like trying to turn life into a strategic video game?

See the thread about the guy wanting to implement 'walking in formation' while exploring...

See the thread about the guy who hid 'password-ed mission dvds' around Shreveport for others in his 'urbex crew'...

See the...well, you get the idea

i hear you,
but i'm not gunna watse my time lookig up "Tard-Ski" threads.
~UEing- the beauty of it , is its simplicity...

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

I got a pair of these for my kid and for $60 I'm amazed at how well they work.

They work more like binoculars than goggles which is kind of a drawback. And 9 times out of 10 I would rather just use a red light but these are pretty affordable and are worth having around IMO.

My dad sells night vision equipment so I've had plenty of time to play around with it.

I have a low magnification monocular which works well for medium range applications and scaring drain workers but for walking around it's like looking down a tube.

Considering the cost of even a basic pair I don't think it would be worth it.

Although they are very good for spotting other night vision devices that are using IR spotlights.

I have a monocular set of night vision that I really haven't found a use for in the UE approach. If you are going out and spotting game or doing something from a distance, then they are decent. To try and maneuver through an abandonment and keep proper footing, you would need a set of $4,000 Gen III goggles with no magnification. Once you invest that much, it would be overkill unless you are trying to assassinate someone in a building with no lights.

If you are in a building that you are trying to avoid flashlight beams, just go with a low lumen red or green light. You won't see as well, but you will still have peripherals and it doesn't stand out as much as a normal flashlight beam.

If you must go with nightvision, I have heard the eyeclops is pretty good for it's price.

Other than that, you would need to spend at LEAST $200 for a decent performing night vision device. I would recommend Bushnell for the low end products. Also, the IR illuminator for Gen I nightvision usually isn't too good, so you should probably get ahold of some IR LEDS or the like.
