Night Vision Goggles

I was thinking of investing in some night vision goggles for urban exploring, but I'm not sure if it's really that much better than just using a flashlight. What's all of your opinions/experiences with night vision goggles?

Point: probably useful in avoiding getting caught, since you'll be able to see without a flashlight that can be seen from outside the building

Counterpoint: incriminating as all hell if you do by some chance get caught...the photographer defense quickly turns into the rather less tenable ninja defense.

Any cheap night vision goggles just aren't worth it. I have a pair, and although you can see in the dark fine, the field of view is very small and you have no peripheral vision so you always have to worry about bumping into things. Basically, the cheap ones are only useful for seeing mid to long ranges.

I've considered making a pair on my own. There's a community for hacking single use digital cameras, so you could get one of them and the materials you'd need to connect it to your computer and stuff for around $30 (that's just an estimate, I haven't actually done enough research here). There are also multiple tutorials for replacing the IR filter of a camera with a piece of film negative to block out visible light, but not IR. Combine that with a head mount, a battery, and an array of IR LEDs, and you've got night vision through the LCD screen.

Of course, this is all just an idea; I haven't actually tried this yet. Opinions?

i tried it with some GenIII goggles once and i noticed two things...

1. i liked it in the dark w/ various kinds of flashlights better
2. i felt stupid as hell

Is it really as simple as he made it out to be? He never really says what lux rating is needed, just "ultra low", and the sources I've looked at have said anywhere from .05 to .0003 would be sufficient. So depending on which source is right, that could cost anywhere from 35 to 100 dollars, but the only one I've seen advertised as just "ultra low lux" was in the 500 dollar range. Have you actually made one for yourself? And if so, what type of camera did you use?

Seems like a really bad idea to me. Peripheral vision aside, you're also not going to be able to notice potentially bad floors as well as you could with a carefully used flashlight.

well, i went to kipkay's page (www.kipkay.com) and he had the link to all the stuff there. i didnt use a video jack however since that only puts an additional pull on the battery.

make sure you use the right leds as the come in various sizes and mw ratings

basically make this for about 35 a box. not a bad price considering its usefulness to an explorer. some building just dont have enough light...

and typically i only use it once i know a building somewhat well. or when it has gotten dark on my way out. i will rarely use it as a primary light source or navigation method rather.

either way, if you make two of them, they dont affect your peripheral vison as much.

His website has a link for the LEDs, but I don't see one for the camera itself...

Why are people are taking UEing too far, the best thing about UE is its simplicity! you don't need much other then yourself, common sence and a flashlight. keep the stupid gimicy gadges at home, its unnecessary weight to carry and you look stupid walking around like a video game character!

people these days especially the younger generations are always turning to fancy gadges and technology to improve and idiot-proof their day to day lives.

they should try "unplugging" yourselves for a day from their ipods, computers, cel phones, etc and take a walk and enjoy the world around you.
i bet most of them can't!

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

Hmm, thanks for all the impute. it seems like the cons outweigh the pros b/c of the cost, weight, and lack of peripherals. Now do you guys have any suggestions other than flashlights since where I go I can hardly see more than 5 feet in front of me with flashlights.

Where are you that visible light won't travel 5 feet, but you expect infrared to work better? Are you having to use dim lights or something? Working in fog? Help us help you.

He is from San Francisco...perpetual blinding fog is a significant possibility.

i carry a standard "2x AA- maglite" they are about $20 at home depot, it is water proof, light weight, durable and comes with an extra bulb built into the batterie compartment! it has never let me down, just make sure you have an extra set of batteries.
sometime it takes a few minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark, at this point you'll be able to see further even with a basic flashlight.

some guys get all fussy and pro-stars about their fancy flashlights, LED's this and candle-power that... to me they seem to be a waste of money, you can get a decent "maglite" that is reliable for a good price.

I used to carry maglites but I found they have a tendency to drink the batteries dry relatively quickly. I use the AA Mini mags at work and I find them rather substandard after being on for about 30 mins. - 1 hour. I also find the throw on the mini mags to be rather pathetic for exploring purposes.
