|  | | | Was checking out the Flagship Hotel, bunkers, and a few other places. Ran into 3 guys taking pics of a abandoned building. I was driving and turned around and asked them if they were expo
loring the building. They said yep and knew of this site. Thought it was kind of odd but surprising at the same time. I dont remember their names.

under that big resort hotel there's a 100 series gun battery from world war two. you can see it from the main road.

I already checked the gun battery out , it's actually located under the Flagship fishing pier. You can only see the entrance if you have a pair of X-ray goggles.

| | | | I really wonder how much of it is really left under the Hotel, I have seen the old WW1/WW2 forts and they were built to get hit by all kinds of bombs and ship to shore weapons, they may have just built the hotel around it and this one battery is all that can be seen, not sure but it would be cool to find out.

yep the San Luis wasnt always there you could enter the big gun emplacements and there was nothing left even back in the 60s except some mounting hardware for the guns lots of beer bottles and graffiti

You may be thinking about the S.S. Selma sitting off Pelican Island, it is a WW1 concrete tanker that was damaged and sank, it is stuck in the mud, the USS Texas has been mostly restored was stuck in the mud now is floating and about to be put in a permanent dry berth in Deerpark.

She saw action in WWI and WWII, and was the Flagship of the U.S. Navy for a few years. That ship has been around for almost 100 years, and only one fatality aboard. Pretty damn lucky ship I'd say. As opposed to her sister the Arizona.
I hope her relocation goes well.

The plan would cost about $20,000,000, the ship would stay were it is, a concrete "tub" would be built around it and water be pumped out and the ship rest on keel blocks, visitors could walk under the ship and restoration could take place. right now pumps work 24/7 to keep water out, the first dry dock work was around 1988, the ship nearly did not make 50+ mile trip to the ship yard, that yard is now out of buisnes, the closest yard that can handle a ship of 27,000 tons is in Alabama, the Texas can not make that trip, so a permanent dry berth is the best way, it is planed to be finished around 2011.

the Battleship Texas keel was actually about 12ft in the muck didnt know they ever managed to float it
last time I saw it was in the late 60s it only had 29 coats of paint on it back then

Fuckin' trip of a lifetime I tell ya, The battleship Texas, The san Jacinto Inn and restaurant, Flea Markets, And some of the sweetest Texas Tail every place I went. They loved the surfer boy look, and the Accent??
That trip was the greatest, it's probably why I still love road trips to this day!!!!
